Eiger Ultra Trail course maps and aid stations

Five courses under the Eiger in Grindelwald, from a 16 km loop above the village to a 261 km team race around the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage area.

July 14 to 18, 2027 Grindelwald, Bernese Oberland

The Eiger Ultra Trail has run in Grindelwald, in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, since 2013, and is now part of the UTMB World Series. The 2027 edition is July 14 to 18. Four races start on Saturday the 17th, the E101 first at 4 AM, then the E51, E35 and E16. The E250 leaves on Wednesday.

The E101 and E51 climb to Grosse Scheidegg, First and the Faulhorn, at about 2,680 m. The E101 and E35 cross beneath the Eiger North Face by Eigergletscher. The E250 is run in teams of two or three on an unmarked route around the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage area, and you navigate it by GPS. The map shows the 2026 courses, which the race pages still carry; the 2027 ones aren't out.

Download the map before you go. Your phone's GPS still shows where you are with no signal, which matters most on the E250, and it helps crews work out which lift reaches which checkpoint.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You race the E250 in a team of two or three and stay within 50 m of each other the whole way. Nothing is marked, so each team needs a GPS device with the official route. The route goes over Sefinafurgga and the Hohtürli, through the Gasterntal and over the Lötschenpass, along the Valais irrigation channels to Belalp, then past the Aletsch and Fiesch glaciers to the Goms, the Grimsel Pass, the Haslital and Rosenlaui.

Kandersteg, Jeizinen, Belalp, Bellwald, Oberwald and Guttannen are Life Bases, where you can sleep, eat and pick up one of your six drop bags. Stechelberg and Finnen are aid stations with no beds. The longest gap is Belalp to Bellwald, 43 km. Stops and distances are from the 2026 supply plan, and the cutoffs from the 2027 regulations.

The E101 starts in the dark at 4 AM and climbs to Grosse Scheidegg. It drops to Bort and climbs back to First, the second time you pass it, then goes by the Bachalpsee and over the Faulhorn. From there it heads past Schynige Platte and down to Burglauenen at the valley floor, where your one drop bag waits. The second half climbs to Wengen and Männlichen and crosses to Kleine Scheidegg. Higher up, at Eigergletscher, it turns onto the traverse beneath the Eiger North Face. The last stretch descends past Brandegg and Pfingstegg to Grindelwald.

Egg has water only, and Eigergletscher is a timed checkpoint with no food or drink. Runners who stop at Burglauenen can run straight to Grindelwald and get an E51 finisher shirt and medal if any are left, with no Running Stones. Stops and distances are the 2026 course; the cutoffs are 2027's.

The organizer warns that the first climb, to Grosse Scheidegg, shouldn't be underestimated. After that you follow the E101 by First and the Bachalpsee to the Faulhorn summit at 2,680 m, then go on toward Schynige Platte before you descend to Burglauenen. From Burglauenen the course runs back up the valley to Grindelwald.

Feld, the Faulhorn and Schwand have food but no crew zone, and Egg is water only. You start at 7:15 or 7:45 AM, by UTMB Index, and the finish closes 13 hours after your block's start. Stops are the 2026 course.

The E35 starts in Burglauenen, a train ride down the valley from Grindelwald. It climbs via Spätenalp to Wengen, then steeply up the Gemsenweg to the Männlichen ridge. With the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau ahead, it crosses to Kleine Scheidegg and the moraine below Eigergletscher, turns onto the traverse under the North Face, and descends the Eiger Trail to Trychelegg and Grindelwald.

Crews can meet you at Eigergletscher, but there's no food or drink there. Your bib is a free train ticket from Grindelwald to the start, and there's no parking in Burglauenen. Stops are the 2026 course.

The E16 heads out toward the Wetterhorn. By Wittegg, above Bort at 1,600 m, you're nearly at the course's highest point. The rest runs through forest, small gorges and meadows by Bort, Nodhalten and Holewang, with a fast descent back into Grindelwald.

The route has been waymarked since December 2016, and in a normal year you can train on it for about eight months. Obere Gletscher, Berien and Hohlenwang are drink stations, and Bort has food. Stops are the 2026 course.

Registration

For 2027 the E101, E51 and E35 go by lottery, and that's over: pre-registration closed on September 28, 2026, and a second draw followed on October 6. The E101 lottery needed a UTMB Index. At least 30% of E101 places and half of the E51 and E35 places go to Swiss runners, and if you miss the draw two years running, you get a guaranteed place the next year.

The E250, E16 and Trail Surprise are first come, first served. Registration opened on October 13, 2026 for runners with a UTMB Index and opens to everyone on October 15. For the E250 you need a UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category, or a 100 km ultra finished since January 1, 2024.

Fees for 2027 are CHF 379 for the E101, CHF 277.20 for the E51, CHF 237.60 for the E35 and CHF 101.85 for the E16. The E250 is CHF 656.15 a runner in the first price tier. Entries can't be passed to another runner. You can move to a shorter distance until June 21, 2027, but you don't get the difference back.

Getting to Grindelwald

The organizer recommends the train. InterCity trains run direct from Zurich and Basel to Interlaken, every 30 minutes, with a connection on to Grindelwald. From Geneva you change in Bern. By car, come through Bern or over the Brünig Pass from Lucerne.

Park at Grindelwald Terminal: 1,000 spaces at CHF 15 a day, with free local buses to the event area or a 15 minute walk. The Eiger+ car park, two minutes from the start, has 160 spaces at CHF 25 a day. There's no parking at all in Burglauenen.

Crewing by cable car

Cable cars, buses and trains reach the E101, E51 and E35 crew zones. The Supporter Ticket costs CHF 99 and covers race-day travel on the Grosse Scheidegg bus, the First, Männlichen and Pfingstegg lifts, the trains to Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen, the Eiger Express to Eigergletscher and the valley train through Burglauenen. On race day the First lift opens early, from 4:45 AM, and the Männlichen lifts run late, until about 9 PM.

On the E250 every checkpoint has an unsigned crew zone, and each team gets two supporter badges: without one, getting into a Life Base isn't guaranteed. Supporters may help only in those zones, and pacing is forbidden: someone can run with you for 500 m at most.

Weather and kit

Down the valley in Interlaken, at 577 m, July averages a high of 24°C (76°F) and a low of 14°C (57°F), with rain on about 13 days. The courses run far higher, past 2,500 m. Storms have changed the race two years running. In 2025 a thunderstorm forecast rerouted the E101, E51 and E35, and took the E101 and E51 off the Faulhorn. In 2026 a forecast of thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail moved the E250 start to Kandersteg and cut it to 200 km.

For the E101, E51 and E35 you carry at least a liter of water, a hooded waterproof jacket with sealed seams, full leg cover and your own cup, since the aid stations have none. The E101 adds two headlamps, and a cold kit of waterproof overpants and a down or synthetic jacket when the organizer calls for it. The E250 list is longer: a silk sleeping bag for the Life Bases, your own tableware, 1.5 liters of water, and Swiss francs for huts that don't take cards.

Eiger Ultra Trail FAQ

When is the Eiger Ultra Trail 2027?

July 14 to 18, 2027, in Grindelwald. The E250 starts on Wednesday the 14th at 8 AM, the Trail Surprise runs Friday the 16th, and the E101, E51, E35 and E16 all start on Saturday the 17th.

Is the Eiger Ultra Trail a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the E101 counts if you finish in under 22 hours. Finishing the E250 in under 90 hours also qualifies you for the Western States lottery.

How do you get into the Eiger Ultra Trail?

The E101, E51 and E35 are a lottery held in September, and the E101 draw needs a UTMB Index. The E250, E16 and Trail Surprise are first come, first served, from mid-October.

Is the E250 marked?

No. Each team navigates with a GPS device loaded with the official route, and a phone counts. Download the map in Goat Maps before you go: GPS still shows where you are with no signal.

What is the Trail Surprise?

A short race on Friday afternoon, 12 to 18 km with 500 to 1,000 m of climbing, starting and finishing in Grindelwald. The route changes every year, and its profile and refreshment point come out three days before, so it isn't on this map.

How high does the Eiger Ultra Trail go?

The E101 and E51 top out on the Faulhorn, at about 2,680 m. The race pages say the E101, E51 and E35 go above 2,500 m and ask for solid experience on high alpine trails.
