Crusher in the Tushar course maps and aid stations

A 69.9 mile gravel race over the Tushar Mountains and back up again, from downtown Beaver to a finish above 10,000 feet.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in July Beaver, Utah

Crusher in the Tushar is Life Time's gravel race in the Tushar Mountains of southern Utah. Burke Swindlehurst, a former pro road racer who grew up in Beaver County, started it in 2011. Both courses leave downtown Beaver and finish at Eagle Point Resort. The Crusher is 69.9 miles, about 60% dirt and gravel, with roughly 10,400 feet of climbing. Half Crushed, added in 2025, is 37 miles.

The 2026 race, set for July 11, was called off because of the Cottonwood Fire, which burned through the range and badly damaged Eagle Point. Wildfire also cancelled the 2024 edition. Life Time hasn't announced a 2027 date, so the map shows the 2026 courses. The aid station pins are approximate. The organizer marks its stations on the elevation profiles but not on a map, so we put each at its mile on the course file. The one on UT-153 that both courses share is at the Betenson Flat junction.

Much of the Crusher is on dirt Forest Service roads in Fishlake National Forest. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The first 10 miles climb gently on pavement up UT-153 out of Beaver. Turn right onto Kents Lake Road, and a mile later the dirt starts: about 21 miles of switchbacks up to about 10,000 feet. You come down to Betenson Flat, where the Kents Lake road meets UT-153, then drop roughly 4,000 feet on washboard into the Piute Valley at Junction.

From Junction the course heads south on US-89 to Circleville and back north on Doc Springs Road, the sandy, hot false flat the organizer calls the Sarlacc Pit. The Col'd Crush starts around mile 52: about five miles of dirt with pitches up to 20%, and the KOM line at mile 56. The last miles follow UT-153 through the Big Flat, then a final paved climb of about 500 feet at 9% to Eagle Point.

Aid stations are at miles 18, 27, 38, 51 and 59 on the 2026 profile. We've mapped the ones at 27 and 59 as a single station at Betenson Flat, which you pass on the way out and again on the way back. You have to reach it by 10 AM on the way out; if you don't, you can ride on to Eagle Point or turn back to Beaver, but you won't be scored. In the 2026 schedule, the waves went off between 6:40 AM (elite men) and 7:05 AM.

Half Crushed rides the Crusher's first climb from Beaver up Kents Lake Road, then turns left at Betenson Flat onto UT-153 and heads straight for Eagle Point. It skips the drop to Junction and the Col'd Crush, and joins the Crusher again for the Big Flat and the paved climb to the finish. The finish is more than 4,000 feet above the start.

There are two aid stations, at about miles 18 and 27. The second is the Crusher's Betenson Flat station, with the same 10 AM cutoff. The 2026 schedule had its mass start at 7:10 AM, after the last Crusher wave. If you've entered the Crusher and cut it short, you aren't scored as a Half Crushed finisher.

Entry and Unbound coins

Entry for 2026 opened in January: deferrals on the 9th, Life Time members on the 16th and everyone else on January 23 at noon Mountain time. Members get the week's head start after six months of Club-Access membership. The Crusher cost $200 and Half Crushed $150, and you had to be 16 on race day.

Fifty Unbound Gravel qualifier coins go to Crusher and Half Crushed finishers. Half go to the top riders in each category, passing down the podium if someone declines. The other 25 are drawn after the awards, and you have to be there with the qualifier tab from your bike plate. A coin guarantees entry to the Unbound 200 or 100, but you still pay the entry fee.

Getting to Beaver and back

Beaver is about 2.5 hours south of Salt Lake City on I-15 and 3.5 hours from Las Vegas. The organizer warns that the town has limited lodging, so book early. The 2026 schedule had packet pickup at Main Street Park on Friday from 1 to 7 PM, and again on race morning from 5:30 to 6:30 AM. The start is at the corner of 200 East and 100 North.

The finish is on the mountain, about 18 miles up UT-153 from Beaver. Shuttles were to run back to town about every 15 minutes from 11 AM to 5 PM in 2026, with the ticket at registration and in your confirmation email.

No crews, one drop bag

Outside support isn't allowed. You live off the aid stations, and a rider caught taking help is removed from the results and barred from the race. Other riders can't help with mechanicals either, so carry what you need to fix your own bike. Spectators may watch only at the start, in Circleville and at the finish, and shouldn't drive on the course.

Your drop bag is the cinch bag from your goodie bag. Write your number on it and put it in the drop bag truck at the start, and it waits for you at the finish. Collect it from the top of the mountain by 5 PM.

Weather and kit

The organizer tells riders to be ready for extreme changes: the course climbs above 10,000 feet twice, and riders saw a 60 degree temperature swing in 2017. In 2025 it reached 95 degrees. July normals at the Beaver Canyon station, at 7,275 feet, are a high of 80°F (27°C) and a low of 52°F (11°C). The race runs in rain, shine, sleet or snow, so put a rain jacket and warm clothes in your drop bag for the finish.

You must keep your helmet on the whole way. Aero bars, clip-ons and e-bikes aren't allowed, and headphones go in one ear only.

Crusher FAQ

When is Crusher in the Tushar 2027?

Not announced yet. The race usually runs in mid-July: it was on July 12 in 2025 and was set for July 11 in 2026. After the Cottonwood Fire, reports call its future uncertain. Beaver County lists Eagle Point Resort, the finish, as closed until further notice, and the resort has said it won't open for the 2026-27 winter.

Why was the 2026 Crusher cancelled?

The Cottonwood Fire. It started in the Tushar Mountains on June 22, 2026, and had covered almost 100,000 acres by June 28. Life Time said that with the fire's impact on Beaver, Eagle Point, local emergency resources and the surrounding community, the race couldn't go ahead as planned. It contacted registered riders about their options.

Is Crusher in the Tushar an Unbound qualifier?

Yes. Fifty coins go to Crusher and Half Crushed finishers, 25 to the top riders in each category and 25 by drawing after the awards. A coin gets you into the Unbound 200 or 100; the entry fee isn't included.

Can I have a support crew at Crusher?

No. Outside support is banned, and riders who take it are removed from the results. You rely on the aid stations, and your drop bag goes to the finish.

What is the cutoff at Crusher in the Tushar?

You must reach the second aid station, at mile 27, by 10 AM. The organizer allows no exceptions; riders who miss it can ride on to Eagle Point or go back down to Beaver, without a result. No overall time limit is published.

How do I get back to Beaver from the finish?

By the race shuttle. In 2026 it was to run about every 15 minutes from 11 AM to 5 PM, with the ticket at registration and in your confirmation email.
