Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB 2027

Five trail races through the vineyards and castles of Chianti Classico, all finishing in Radda in Chianti.

March 18 to 21, 2027 Radda in Chianti, Tuscany

Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB is a long weekend of trail races in the hills between Florence and Siena, run from the hilltop village of Radda in Chianti. The longest, the Ultra Trail Chianti Castles, is a loop of about 120 km that reaches Castello di Brolio and Monteluco and comes back over Monte San Michele. The 73 km, the race actually named Chianti Ultra Trail, takes a shorter line through the same hills. The marathon starts in Castellina in Chianti and the half in Gaiole in Chianti. Those two towns and Radda were the three parts of the League of Chianti, which Florence set up around 1250 with Radda as its seat. Every race finishes in Radda.

The race makes you carry a phone with the LiveTrail app and international roaming. Download the course map before you go as well: your phone's GPS shows where you are on it without a data connection. The map shows the 2027 courses from the race pages, except the 10K, whose file is still the 2026 one. The 2027 runner's guide isn't out yet.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The first 40 km roll through the vineyard hills on the Siena side, past Arillo and Poggio San Polo to Castello di Brolio, which has belonged to the Ricasoli family for nearly 800 years. The second half is harder and rougher underfoot. You climb to Monteluco, then after Gaiole and Castello di Albola make the long climb to Monte San Michele. The organizer calls those two the ends of the territory, and the course tops out at 901 m.

The race page bills it as 123 km with 5,200 m of climbing; its course data, which the stops here follow, runs to 124 km. Your drop bag waits at Gaiole, 77.8 km in. Crews can meet you at Brolio, Monteluco, Cantalici, Gaiole, Albola and San Michele. The longest gaps are about 15 km, Cantalici to Gaiole and San Michele back down to Radda. The 2027 intermediate cutoffs aren't out yet, so look for them in the runner's guide. The 26:30 limit puts the finish at 6:30 AM on Sunday.

The race that gives the event its name follows the 120 south to Poggio San Polo, then turns east to Castello di Meleto and north through Tenuta Perano to Castello di Albola, where your drop bag is. The organizer describes the first 40 km as fast and runnable, through vineyards. After that you climb Monte San Michele, the biggest climb of the course, to its high point around 60 km, then descend past Volpaia and down the valley into Radda.

Crews can meet you only at Albola and San Michele, and from San Michele it's 15 km to the finish with no stop. The banner says 73 km and 3,000 m; the course data finishes at 73.9 km. The 11:00 PM finish cutoff matches the 16 hour limit, and the 2027 intermediate cutoffs aren't published yet.

The marathon starts on Friday from Castellina in Chianti, which the organizer lists as a new start, and joins the longer courses at Arillo. There's no crew access on the marathon. The banner gives 46 km and 1,650 m of climbing; the course data finishes at 46.9 km.

The Wine Run starts downhill out of Radda, then rolls up and down through the vineyards and back into the village. It's billed as 10 km with 400 m of climbing, but the course data on its race page measures 11.6 km, and the GPX it links is the 2026 file. There are no stops and no Running Stones.

Registration

Entry is first come, first served through UTMB, with no lottery. UTMB Index holders had a 48 hour head start from 3 June 2026, and from 5 June it opened to everyone until 27 February 2027 or until each race sells out. There's no waiting list, and the marathon has already sold out. The organizer says the event has sold out since its first edition. Start waves are set by UTMB Index, and without one you start in the last wave.

To collect your bib you need a medical certificate that meets Italian law. You also need personal accident insurance that covers search and rescue in Italy, which the entry fee doesn't include. Entries can't be transferred or deferred, and without the cancellation insurance there's no refund. You can move to a shorter race up to four weeks before, if it has room. Runners aged 18 or 19 can't enter the 120 or the 73.

Getting to Radda in Chianti

Radda is a small hilltop village about 50 km from Florence and 30 km from Siena, by the organizer's figures. Florence airport is about an hour's drive, Pisa an hour and a half and Bologna just under two. The nearest train stations, Montevarchi and Figline Valdarno, are 25 and 35 minutes away by car, with no bus to Radda from either, only taxis. Buses run to Radda from Florence and Siena but not on Sundays, and Saturday service may be limited. Buy the ticket before you board.

Parking in Radda is limited, and the organizer recommends its shuttles. In 2026 it ran paid shuttles from Villa Costanza in Florence, which you reach by tram from the airport or Santa Maria Novella station, and they had to be booked ahead. For 2027 it plans shuttles to the start for the races that leave from Radda, and back to Castellina and Gaiole after the marathon and the half. Booking will be required and opens in 2027.

Crews and supporters

Only the 120 and the 73 have crew access, and only at the aid stations marked as assistance points: Brolio, Monteluco, Cantalici, Gaiole, Albola and San Michele on the 120, and Albola and San Michele on the 73. Each runner gets one supporter, no ticket needed, and the zone runs from 500 m before the aid station to 500 m after. You can go in 15 minutes before your runner is due and hand over clothes and food that fit in a bag of about 30 liters. Outside those zones, nobody may help you.

There are no pacers: supporters may not run with their runner outside the marked zones near the aid stations. The organizer runs shuttles for supporters following the 120 and the 73, booked ahead. The free LiveTrail app shows your runner's last checkpoint and estimated times for the next ones.

Weather and what to carry

The race comes at the start of spring. Siena, at 322 m, averages highs of 14.6°C and lows of 5.3°C in March, with rain on 7 or 8 days, by the 1991 to 2020 normals. Radda is higher, at about 530 m, and San Michele, the highest aid station, is at 847 m.

For the 120 and the 73, the 2027 kit list asks for two working headlamps with backup power for each, a hooded waterproof jacket with sealed seams, and full-length tights. You also need a running pack, a phone with LiveTrail and roaming, 1 liter of water, a cup of at least 15 cl (bottles and flasks with lids don't count), a survival blanket, a whistle, a food reserve and ID. The 46 needs the same minus the lamps, jacket and tights. If the forecast calls for it, the organizer can add items such as a warm layer, waterproof overtrousers and 2 liters of water, and tells runners before bib collection opens.

When is the Chianti Ultra Trail 2027?

The event runs 18 to 21 March 2027 in Radda in Chianti. The marathon is on Friday the 19th. The 120 starts at 4:00 AM and the 73 at 7:00 AM on Saturday the 20th, and the half and the 10K are on Sunday the 21st.

Which race is the Chianti Ultra Trail?

The event as a whole is Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB, but the race with that name is the 73 km, CUT 73. The longest race is the Ultra Trail Chianti Castles, UTCC 120.

Is the Chianti Ultra Trail a Western States qualifier?

The UTCC 120 is. Western States lists the March 2027 edition as a qualifier for its 2028 lottery, with a finish in under 24 hours. It is also a Golden Ticket race: the top two men and the top two women get entry to the 2027 Western States.

How many Running Stones do you get at the Chianti Ultra Trail?

4 for the UTCC 120, 3 for the CUT 73, 2 for the CMT 46 and 1 for the CHT 20. The 10K gives none.

Can you have a pacer or crew at the Chianti Ultra Trail?

No pacers: nobody may run with you outside the marked zones near the aid stations. Crews can help only on the 120 and the 73, one supporter per runner, in the zones around the assistance aid stations.

Do you need a medical certificate for the Chianti Ultra Trail?

Yes. Your entry is only valid once a medical certificate that meets Italian law has been checked, and without one you can't collect your bib or start. You also need accident insurance that covers search and rescue in Italy.
