BWR Utah course maps: Waffle, Wafer and Wanna

Three gravel routes out of downtown Cedar City, across the high desert valleys north of town.

May 14 to 15, 2027 Cedar City, Utah

The Belgian Waffle Ride Utah is the BWR series' stop in Cedar City, in southwest Utah, and the organizer calls it the Hell of the South (West). The eighth edition moves from June to May: it runs May 14 and 15, 2027, with the ride on Saturday the 15th from Main Street Park, downtown.

You pick one of three distances: the long Waffle, the middle Wafer or the short Wanna. The 2026 edition was an all-new route of gravel, sand and rock at altitude, and the organizer took out the technical singletrack of earlier editions.

The map shows the 2026 courses. The organizer says Utah is in for substantial changes in 2027, and the final routes will come later: the BWR FAQ says routes come out only the week before the event, out of respect for private landowners. Until then, download the 2026 map to learn the roads north of town. Your phone's GPS shows where you are on it without a signal.

The organizer's 2026 route file leaves Cedar City north on Old Highway 91, then takes Gap Road and Little Salt Lake Road onto Jackrabbit Road. The Waffle goes farther north than the other courses, by Long Hollow and Kane Springs Road, before it comes back through Parowan Gap to Horse Hollow Road. The last part crosses the Bald Hills and the Three Peaks trails and returns to Main Street on the Coal Creek Trail.

The organizer described the 2026 terrain as sandy washboard, packed-dirt rollers and climbs on open roads at altitude. The BWR FAQ says a Waffle usually has six feed zones, but the organizer's page for the 2025 Utah Waffle listed four. The organizer's 2026 route files mark its feed zones, and the course lines on the map show those pins. The stop list on this page has only the start and finish.

In the organizer's 2026 file the Wafer starts like the Waffle, north on Old Highway 91 and out to Jackrabbit Road, but turns back toward Parowan Gap without the long loop north. From the gap it follows Horse Hollow Road and the Lund Highway to the Bald Hills, then the Three Peaks trails and the Coal Creek Trail back to town.

The organizer listed two feed zones on the 2025 Utah Wafer.

BWR Utah Wanna

The short course, north of town to the Three Peaks area and back.

The 2026 Wanna stays close to Cedar City. In the organizer's file it heads north on Old Highway 91 and Midvalley Road to the Three Peaks area northwest of town, then comes back through the north side of town and down the Coal Creek Trail to Main Street. The 2025 Utah Wanna had one feed zone.

Registration

Entry is through BikeReg. It opened on October 13, 2026, at 8 a.m. Pacific. You can switch between the Waffle, Wafer and Wanna in your BikeReg account until the Sunday before the event. There are no changes on race morning, and switching distances during the ride counts as a DNF.

If you can't go, the organizer gives full credit up to three months before the event, 50% up to a month before and 25% up to a week before. Credits expire at the end of the 2028 BWR season. A cash refund needs the event insurance offered at checkout and a valid claim through Allianz.

Pick up your packet at the expo the day before, with a government photo ID. Nobody else can collect it for you. Every rider also has to attend one of the two rider briefings that day.

Getting to Cedar City

Cedar City is on Interstate 15, about 170 miles north of Las Vegas and 250 miles south of Salt Lake City. St. George is 50 miles down the interstate. Cedar City Regional Airport has Delta Connection flights from Salt Lake City.

The event page lists Main Street Park, 200 N Main St, in the middle of town, as the 2027 race-day location. It also says the confirmed venue, the schedule, start times and rider logistics will come closer to the date.

Support and rules on course

The roads stay open to traffic, and you ride under local bicycle laws. Crossing a solid yellow line gets you disqualified on the spot. The courses are marked with arrows and flags, but the organizer leaves navigation to you, so carry the route on a GPS or your phone.

Your own support is allowed, from a fixed spot at the roadside. The organizer asks that it be near a feed zone. Support cars can't follow riders, and a hand-up from any vehicle that isn't an official BWR one is an automatic DQ.

The rules require a helmet and a phone to call for a pickup if you have to quit. If you're still riding after sunset you also need a white front light and a red rear reflector.

Weather in May

By NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Cedar City airport, May highs average 73°F and lows 40°F, with less than an inch of rain for the month. At 5,670 feet the mornings start cold, and the afternoons can be warm.

The organizer's rules say the ride is never canceled or postponed: it goes ahead "through rain, sleet, snow, or heat".

BWR Utah FAQ

When is BWR Utah 2027?

May 14 and 15, 2027, in Cedar City, with the ride on Saturday, May 15. It has moved from June: the 2026 edition was June 12 and 13.

How long are the BWR Utah courses?

In 2026 the Waffle was 106 miles with about 5,500 feet of climbing, the Wafer 65.1 miles with about 2,900 feet, and the Wanna 31.3 miles with about 1,200 feet. The organizer will confirm the 2027 routes and distances separately.

Where can I get the BWR Utah GPX file?

Not yet for 2027. The BWR FAQ says the routes come out only the week before the event, out of respect for private landowners, and are also available at the expo. The map on this page is the 2026 course.

Are there feed zones at BWR Utah?

Yes, stocked with hydration and Neversecond nutrition. The BWR FAQ says a Waffle usually has six, a Wafer four and a Wanna one or two, but the 2025 Utah courses had four, two and one. You can have your own support too, best near a feed zone, but never from a moving vehicle.

Can I ride BWR Utah on a mountain bike?

Yes. The organizer allows mountain bikes, e-bikes, tandems and ElliptiGOs, though it recommends a good gravel bike. Tri bikes and clip-on aero bars are not allowed.

Is BWR Utah part of the Quad-Tripel Crown?

It was in 2026, as the third of four rounds with Arizona, California and Montana. Riders who finished at least three of the four earned the Crown. The organizer hasn't published the 2027 series calendar and format yet.
