BWR Montana course maps and rider guide

Gravel and ranch roads north of Bozeman, out to Springhill and beyond. In 2026 the Wanna was 31.3 miles and the Waffle 106.

September 17 to 18, 2027 Bozeman, Montana

The Belgian Waffle Ride Montana is the series' Bozeman stop, and the organizer calls it the Hell of the Bozone. The third edition moves from June to late season: September 17 and 18, 2027. The 2026 ride was on June 20.

The event page promises broad valley views, rolling ranchland, gravel climbs and stretches of backcountry. In 2026 all three courses left Glen Lake Rotary Park and headed north to an aid station at the church in Springhill, where the Wanna turned for home and the Wafer and Waffle kept going.

The map on this page shows the 2026 courses. The organizer says the 2027 routes, feed zones, venue and start times will be announced separately, and it keeps each route back until the week before the ride. Download the map before you go, so your phone still shows where you are if you miss a turn.

The 2026 Waffle went north out of Bozeman on Story Mill and Sypes Canyon roads to the Springhill church at mile 18.6. From there it worked north on Reese Creek, Bear Creek, Foster Creek and Dry Creek roads to the Skinner Road aid station at mile 45, then over Menard and Bremer Creek roads to the Pass Creek Community Center at mile 66.3. Gee Norman Road brought it back to Springhill at mile 90.1, and Penwell Bridge and Belle Creek roads took it home.

The organizer's course file marks a 1:30 PM cutoff around mile 53, between Skinner Road and Pass Creek. Springhill to Skinner Road is the longest gap without aid, about 26 miles. The organizer lists about 7,500 feet of climbing.

The 2026 Wafer followed the Waffle north past Springhill, then cut across on Reynolds Creek and Rocky Mountain roads and came back down Gee Norman Road. Its only aid station was the Springhill church, at mile 18 and again at mile 49, so there were about 31 miles between the two visits. The organizer lists about 4,500 feet of climbing.

The 2026 Wanna rode the same roads as the longer courses as far as the Springhill church, its one aid station, at mile 18.6. From there it turned south on Walker Road and came back to town by Penwell Bridge, Baseline and Belle Creek roads. The organizer lists about 2,000 feet of climbing.

The event page gives 31.3 miles, but the organizer's own 2026 route file measures about 33.6, so plan for a little more.

Registration

Entry is through BikeReg, which opened for 2027 on October 13, 2026. Pick the Waffle, Wafer or Wanna when you sign up. You can switch distances in your BikeReg account until the Sunday before the ride, or at packet pickup if you leave extra time. You can't switch on race morning, and changing distance out on the course counts as a DNF.

There are no refunds unless you bought the event insurance (Allianz) and have a valid claim. Otherwise you get credit: all of it up to three months out, half up to a month out, a quarter up to a week out. The credits expire at the end of the 2027 BWR season.

Getting to Bozeman

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is next to Belgrade, eight miles northwest of Bozeman, and it's the busiest airport in Montana. Yellowstone National Park is about 90 minutes away if you want to stay on after the ride.

In 2026 the venue was Glen Lake Rotary Park, at 173 Bridger Vale Drive. BikeReg lists the same address for 2027, but the organizer says the venue will be confirmed separately. Pick up your packet at the Unroad Expo the day before. There's an early pickup on race morning too, but the organizer warns that the lines are long and riders miss their start. Nobody else can collect your packet for you, because each rider signs their own waiver.

Feed zones and your own support

The feed zones carry Neversecond drinks and nutrition, and the organizer says they usually have water, Coke, bananas, pretzels and chips too. In 2026 the Waffle passed four aid stations, at three places, and the Wafer and Wanna only the Springhill church.

You can have your own support, but the organizer asks that it happen near an aid station, so the trash stays off the course. A hand-up from any vehicle that isn't an official BWR one gets you disqualified.

Weather and bikes

September in Bozeman averages a high of 71°F and a low of 42°F, with about 1.4 inches of rain over the month, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. Mornings start cool and afternoons can be warm, so bring layers you can stuff in a pocket.

The organizer recommends a gravel bike, but mountain bikes, e-bikes and tandems are allowed. In 2026 the Waffle and Wafer had MTB, single speed and tandem classes, and the Wafer and Wanna had e-bike classes.
