Bryce Canyon Ultras aid station map

Six distances from a working ranch on the Sevier River, up Proctor Canyon and onto the Paunsaugunt Plateau, where the longer courses come home through the hoodoos of Thunder Mountain and Red Canyon.

September 18 to 19, 2027 Hatch, Utah

The Bryce Canyon Ultras start and finish at Lucky 7 Ranch, a working ranch two miles north of Hatch, Utah. All six distances go on Saturday, September 18, 2027, and the 100 mile runs into Sunday afternoon. Bryce was one of the Ultra Adventures races that Matt Gunn started building in 2012, and Aravaipa Running took it over in 2026.

Every course climbs from the ranch into Proctor Canyon and onto the plateau. The 100 mile, 50 mile and 60K run the rims and the forest roads in the middle of the plateau, then come back down the Thunder Mountain Trail and through Red Canyon. Most of the miles are between 7,000 and 9,000 feet. The organizer's 2027 page lists the same courses and aid stations as the 2026 runner guide, and warns they can change with the permits.

A device with an offline course map is required gear, and the runner guide says cell service is limited or missing on parts of the course. The organizer draws its courses on CalTopo, and this map draws the same lines. It pins the ranch and the two aid stations with a published position, Coyote Hollow and Thunder Mountain. Download it in Goat Maps before you go and GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The 100 mile is the 50 mile course run twice, 100.6 miles with 14,002 feet of climbing. You come back through Lucky 7 Ranch at mile 50.3 and have to leave by 11:00 PM. Leave near that cutoff and the climb to Proctor Canyon and the plateau roads to Coyote Hollow (cutoff 7:30 AM Sunday) are nearly all in the dark; the 2026 guide put Sunday's sunrise at 7:16.

The map pins Coyote Hollow (miles 25.3 and 75.6) and Thunder Mountain (33, 38.9, 83.3 and 89.2). The organizer also lists Proctor Canyon (5 and 55.3), Blue Fly (10.8 and 61.1), East Fork (17.4 and 67.7, with drop bags) and Hillsdale (44.2 and 94.5), which aren't on this map. The longest gap is 7.9 miles, East Fork to Coyote Hollow.

It's 50.2 miles with 6,512 feet of climbing. Five miles of doubletrack take you to Proctor Canyon, climbing about 700 feet in the last two. The Grandview Trail heads south, then you double back up onto the rim through a hoodoo amphitheater to Blue Fly (mile 10.8). Doubletrack drops gently northeast to East Fork (17.4), near the East Fork of the Sevier River, and turns northwest to Coyote Hollow (25.3).

From Coyote Hollow the Thunder Mountain Trail crosses about a dozen small ridges, then drops steeply through hoodoos, with loose gravel over hardpack on the steep pitches. At Thunder Mountain aid (mile 33) you run a loop on the Golden Wall Trail, about 1,400 feet up and down, and come back through at 38.9. Grandview takes you south to Hillsdale (44.2) with more than 800 feet of climbing, and the last 6.1 miles roll over foothill ridges to the ranch.

Getting to Lucky 7 Ranch

Lucky 7 Ranch is at mile marker 119 on Highway 89, 2 miles north of Hatch and 13 miles from Panguitch. Turn off at the real estate sales office and the Paunsaugunt Cliffs sign, cross the bridge, stay right and go through the white fence. The start, finish, bib pickup, drop bags and camping are all on the ranch. Tents, cars and RVs camp on the grass, and RV camping is dry, with no hookups.

The nearest airport is St. George, just over two hours away. Las Vegas and Salt Lake City are about four. From Las Vegas the organizer recommends Highway 9 through Zion to Mt. Carmel Junction, then Highway 89 north, though your GPS won't send you that way. Bib pickup is at the ranch on Friday, September 17, from 2 to 7 PM, and on race morning from 4 to 8 AM.

Crewing, pacing and drop bags

Only the 50 mile and 100 mile have crews and pacers. In the 50 mile, crews and pacers meet you at Coyote Hollow. In the 100 mile they can be at Thunder Mountain at mile 38.9, the ranch at halfway, Coyote Hollow at 75.6 and Thunder Mountain again at 89.2. Both are public trailheads, 24 minutes' drive from the ranch to Coyote Hollow and 11 to Thunder Mountain. Parking at Thunder Mountain is short, so use the pullouts to the east or the Red Canyon Visitor Center and walk the bike path. There are no shuttles, and two or three crew per runner is the limit.

One pacer at a time, with a visible bib, and they can't carry food, water or gear for you. Spectators are allowed only at the start and finish. Drop bags go to the drop-off near the start by 6:00 AM Saturday. The tables put them at East Fork, Thunder Mountain and the ranch, and at Coyote Hollow in the 50 mile.

Weather and what to carry

At NOAA's Hatch station, 6,893 feet, September averages a high of 75°F and a low of 35°F (1991 to 2020 normals). The organizer expects the 40s on race morning and warns of afternoon heat, thunderstorms and the odd snow at this time of year. Start in warm layers: a warm-up bag left at the start goes to the finish for you.

Required gear is a headlamp, a hydration system, a device with an offline course map, and your bib on the front. It's a cupless race, so carry a bottle or cup to fill. Gaiters are recommended and trekking poles allowed. If you drop, do it at an aid station; a ride back from some of them can take up to an hour.

Bryce Canyon FAQ

When is the Bryce Canyon Ultras 2027?

Saturday, September 18, 2027. The 100 mile starts at 5:00 AM, the 50 mile at 5:30, the 60K at 6:00, the 50K at 6:30, the 30K at 7:00 and the half marathon at 8:00. The 100 mile closes at 5:00 PM on Sunday, September 19.

Does the Bryce Canyon Ultras run in Bryce Canyon National Park?

The organizer's permits come from Dixie National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management and local and private landowners; the park isn't on that list. The courses run on the northern half and western edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, and from the rims of the longer courses you look toward the park's western edge. The park is 30 minutes' drive from the ranch.

Is the Bryce 100 a Western States qualifier?

It isn't on Western States' lists of qualifying races for the 2027 or 2028 runs when this page was checked. Zion, another of Aravaipa's Ultra Adventures races, is.

Can you have a pacer at the Bryce Canyon Ultras?

In the 50 mile and 100 mile only. 50 mile pacers start at Coyote Hollow (mile 25.3). In the 100 mile they can join at Thunder Mountain (mile 38.9) and later at the ranch, Coyote Hollow or Thunder Mountain on the second lap. One pacer at a time, on foot, registered and with a visible bib.

What are the cutoffs at the Bryce Canyon Ultras?

The 100 mile has to leave the ranch for its second lap by 11:00 PM Saturday and finish by 5:00 PM Sunday. The 50 mile closes at 11:30 PM, the 60K at 9:30 PM and the 50K at 7:30 PM, all on Saturday, with cutoffs at every aid station between. The 30K has 8 hours and the half 6.

Is there cell service on the Bryce Canyon Ultras course?

Not everywhere. The runner guide says service is limited or missing on parts of the course and tells you not to count on a connection for the map. Save the organizer's course map for offline use before race day; a device with an offline map is required gear.
