Broken Arrow Skyrace course maps and aid stations

Five of the weekend's races at Palisades Tahoe, from a vertical race up Washeshu Peak to two laps of the 23K loop.

June 17 to 20, 2027 Olympic Valley, California

Broken Arrow is a mountain running weekend at Palisades Tahoe, the ski resort in Olympic Valley that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics. The longer courses climb from the Village onto terrain that's mostly above treeline: Red Dog Ridge, the KT-22 saddle, and the exposed ridge to the Stairway to Heaven ladder on Washeshu Peak, at about 9,000 feet. In 2025 it was the only US stop on both the Golden Trail World Series and the WMRA World Cup, and it drew more than 3,700 runners from 31 countries.

The 2027 race runs June 17 to 20. The map marks the 2026 start, finish and aid stations, since the 2027 race pages and schedule aren't out yet, and the organizer says the exact courses shift a little each year with the snow. Download the map before race weekend so you can see where you are on the ridge without counting on a signal.

Each lap leaves the Village on the Western States trail toward Highway 89, about 3.25 miles that may be the most runnable of the day. Then it climbs to Snow King, along Red Dog Ridge and across the KT-22 saddle to the Headwall and the Stairway to Heaven, the high point at about 9,000 feet. You drop into Shirley Basin past Siberia at mile 8.85, climb about 550 feet out of the snowiest part of the course to High Camp at mile 11.75, and run back down to the Village to do it all again.

The Village aid station at halfway is the only place your crew can help you, and where your drop bag waits. You pass Siberia and High Camp again on the second lap, but the organizer gives their miles for the first lap only, so the stops list has them once. In 2026 it started Saturday at 7 AM, with a 12 hour cutoff.

The 23K draws the elites. It has the biggest prize money and was a gold label race in the 2026 WMRA World Cup. It's one lap of the loop the 46K runs twice, climbing nearly 5,000 feet from the valley floor at 6,200 feet. The landmarks along the way include Emigrant Pass, at 8,750 feet on the Western States route, and views into the Granite Chief Wilderness. The last descent from High Camp follows the Thunder Mountain singletrack.

There are no drop bags and no crew on the course. In 2026 it started on Sunday in waves from 8:00 to 9:10 AM, elites first, with a 7 hour cutoff. It's the most popular distance and the organizer expects it to sell out soon after registration opens.

The organizer says many runners call the 18K "the 23k without any 'runnable' sections": nearly 3,800 feet of climbing in 11 miles. It goes up Red Dog Ridge and the headwall of KT-22, then along the rocky ridge to the Stairway to Heaven and the top of Washeshu Peak. Siberia comes at mile 4.9, then a fast descent to the bottom of Shirley Canyon and a climb back out to the Julia Millon Memorial Aid Station, "Julia's", at mile 7.6. From there it's downhill to the finish.

In 2026 it started on Friday at 10 AM, with a 6 hour cutoff. The race warns that a 10 AM start is usually hot.

Broken Arrow 11K

The organizer calls the 11K a "gateway drug" to the longer races. It heads east out of the Village on the Western States trail toward Highway 89, turns onto a dirt road after 2 miles and climbs over Snow King Peak, then comes down a steep mile, about 730 feet, to the finish.

In 2026 it started on Saturday at 8 AM, with a 4 hour cutoff. You have to be 16 or older.

Broken Arrow Ascent

The vertical race: 2,840 feet up talus and the Headwall Ridge to Washeshu Peak.

Distance
3.6 mi (6 km)
Climbing
2,840 ft (866 m)

The Ascent, once the VK, goes straight up from the Base-to-Base Gondola Plaza to the summit of Washeshu Peak, over steep rock slabs, off-trail talus, scree and maybe snow. The top is the Headwall Ridge, with a bolted hand line and the Stairway to Heaven ladder. In 2026 it was a WMRA World Cup race and the USATF uphill mountain running championship, and it started Friday at 8 AM.

There are no aid stations, only a feed station at the finish. Your drop bag, no bigger than one foot each way, goes to the top of the Siberia lift. From the finish you walk 1.66 miles down to High Camp and take the tram. About once every five years wind or weather stops the tram, and you go down on foot.

Registration

Entry is on UltraSignup, and 2027 registration opens December 7, 2026 at 9 AM PST. The organizer says every distance commonly sells out the day it opens. After that there's a free rolling waitlist: most invites go out in April and May, you have 48 hours to accept, and in 2026 the last ones went out June 5.

In 2026 the 46K cost $199, the 23K $150, the 18K $130, the Ascent $105 and the 11K $99. The Triple Crown, the Ascent, 46K and 23K on three days, was $445 for 200 places. Entries can't be refunded or transferred, but you can switch distance until early June if there's room, and take a partial credit toward next year if you ask by mid May.

Getting to Olympic Valley

Palisades Tahoe sits off Highway 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City, on the north side of Lake Tahoe. It's 42 miles from Reno, 96 from Sacramento and 196 from San Francisco, by Interstate 80. Reno/Tahoe airport is 48.9 miles away. Amtrak and Greyhound stop in Truckee, 11.7 miles away, and the TART buses and TART Connect shuttles around Tahoe and Truckee are free.

The race is based in the Village at Palisades Tahoe, which has free parking lots around it. It has discounts at hotels in the Village, at PlumpJack Inn and in Tahoe City. Campgrounds around North Lake Tahoe fill up fast in summer.

Crew, pacers and poles

No race allows pacers. Only the 46K allows a crew, and only in the crew area by the Village aid station at halfway. Help anywhere else on any course gets you disqualified, and cutting switchbacks can too.

Poles are allowed and the organizer strongly encourages them, but if you start with poles you carry them to the finish. Practice before race day: on the Stairway to Heaven ladder you need one free hand for the rungs.

Weather and snow

June in nearby Tahoe City averages highs around 69°F and lows around 40°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The courses are mostly above 8,000 feet and exposed, and the organizer has seen lightning, snow, gale force winds and extreme heat on race weekend. Some years the whole course has been under snow. MicroSpikes are allowed then, and the race puts in hand lines on steep snow and talus.

For a hot day the race recommends a hydration vest, shoes with good grip, sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen. If it's cold, add a wind or light waterproof shell, light pants, a warm layer, gloves and a beanie. Carry at least 16 ounces of water, a whistle and your phone.

Broken Arrow FAQ

When is Broken Arrow Skyrace 2027?

June 17 to 20, 2027, at Palisades Tahoe. Registration opens December 7, 2026. The 2027 schedule isn't out yet: in 2026 the Ascent and 18K were on Friday, the 46K and 11K on Saturday and the 23K on Sunday.

How hard is it to get into Broken Arrow?

The organizer says every distance commonly sells out the day registration opens, December 7, 2026 for the 2027 race. After that you can join the free waitlist, which moves as runners drop out, mostly in April and May.

Can you have a pacer or crew at Broken Arrow?

No pacers in any race. Only 46K runners can have a crew, and only at the Village aid station at halfway, where their drop bags are too.

What is the Stairway to Heaven at Broken Arrow?

A ladder at the end of the exposed ridge from the top of the Headwall to Washeshu Peak, near the races' high point of about 9,000 feet. The 46K, 23K, 18K and Ascent all climb it. If you run with poles, stow them or hold them in one hand: you need the other for the rungs.

How do you get down after the Broken Arrow Ascent?

You walk or jog 1.66 miles from the finish down to High Camp, then ride the tram 2,000 feet down to the Village. If high wind or bad weather stops the tram, you go down on foot on a marked descent.

Is Broken Arrow a Golden Trail Series race?

It was in 2025, the series' only US stop. It isn't on the 2026 Golden Trail World Series calendar, whose seven races and final are all outside the US. In 2026 the 23K and Ascent were WMRA Mountain Running World Cup races.
