Breck Epic stage maps and aid stations

Six days of backcountry loops out of Breckenridge, most of it above 10,000 feet. The 2027 stages aren't out yet, so the map shows the 2026 courses.

August 15 to 20, 2027 Breckenridge, Colorado

The Breck Epic is a six-day mountain bike stage race in Breckenridge, Colorado, first run in 2009. It's a cloverleaf: every stage starts and finishes within a mile of downtown, so you sleep in the same bed all week while the loops head out into the trails of Summit and Park Counties. Most of the race is above 10,000 feet.

The 2027 edition runs August 15 to 20. Its stages aren't published yet, and the organizer tweaks the courses every year as trails open and close, so the map shows the 2026 stages, which it called very similar to 2025's. The lines are from the event map on the organizer's course page. They're rides recorded on the 2023 stages (Stage 5 in August 2021), so in places they won't follow the 2026 courses exactly.

Distances, climbing and aid station miles on this page are from the 2026 stage list at the top of the organizer's course page; its daily schedule and the route notes further down give different numbers. Only Baker's Tank and Boreas Pass are pinned on the map, and each stage below says where its other aid stations were.

The race warns that the courses may stray a little from the GPX, and marks them heavily. Download the map anyway: you can preview each loop at home, and on course GPS shows where you are without a signal.

Registration and entry fees

You enter on the organizer's registration page, and the price steps up through the year. For 2027 a six-day solo entry is $899 until November 30, 2026, then $999 to the end of December, and $1,199 by race week. A three-day entry is $549 until November 30, rising to $749.

You can race six days solo or as a duo, including a duo relay where one of you rides each day, or three days, stages 1 to 3 or 4 to 6. Stages 2 to 4 are for U23 and junior riders. Finish all six stages solo or as a duo and you get the BMF belt buckle.

Full refunds run to December 31 of the year before the race. After that you can defer for up to two years with no fee, right up to race day, or transfer your entry for free until 5 PM on check-in day.

Getting to Breckenridge

Fly into Denver, Vail (Eagle County) or Grand Junction: all three are on Interstate 70. Leave I-70 at Frisco and take Highway 9 south about 10 miles to Breckenridge.

Race headquarters, the Epic Athlete Village, is at Beaver Run Resort, 620 Village Road, at the base of Peak 9. Check-in and the mandatory rider meeting are there on the Saturday before Stage 1. The organizer would rather you rent a car than take the airport shuttle, which charges extra for bike boxes.

Aid bags and bike support

Each rider gets three aid bags at check-in, one for each aid station, with your number on them. Drop them at the Beaver Run event tent by 7:30 AM and they'll be waiting at the aid stations, sorted by number. They come back to race headquarters by 4 PM. The aid stations stock fruit, PB&Js, water and Skratch Labs food and drink, with some tech support.

The organizer's word for the week is self-sufficiency. Local shops sell service plans, but bring your own sealant, chains, brake pads, derailleur hangers and a spare tire or two, and a spare of anything proprietary on your bike.

Weather and kit

August normals in Breckenridge are a high of 70 °F and a low of 37 °F. The organizer says to expect starts in the mid-40s and finishes in the mid to high 70s. Clouds bring rain, and at this height rain brings lightning and the risk of hypothermia. If the sky looks at all doubtful, put warm and waterproof layers in your aid bags and your pack.

There are only three rules: don't be a jerk, wear your helmet, and don't litter. Anyone who is serving or has served a USADA or WADA suspension can't race.

Breck Epic FAQ

When is the Breck Epic 2027?

August 15 to 20, 2027, with check-in on the Saturday before Stage 1. Registration for 2027 is open.

Is the map the 2027 course?

No. The 2027 stages aren't out yet, so the map shows the 2026 ones. The organizer changes the courses a little every year as trails are built, closed or approved.

Can I race only three days?

Yes. Three-day riders do stages 1 to 3 or stages 4 to 6, and U23 and junior riders can do stages 2 to 4.

What is the MEGA Epic?

All six stages ridden back to back by one rider, against a clock that never stops. In 2026 MEGA riders lined up at the front of the Stage 4 start on Wednesday, left a few minutes ahead of the field and turned off toward Stage 1. You can use the race's aid stations, your own crew, lodging or a backcountry camp, and you carry a Spot tracker the race supplies.

Where can I watch the Breck Epic?

In 2026 stages 2 to 4 started at the corner of Ridge Street and Washington Avenue, downtown. The first aid station on Stage 3 sat behind the locked Mountain Meadows gate: park at the Sallie Barber trailhead and walk or ride about a mile. The Stage 5 finish on Peak 7 had no parking, so take the gondola from town. The organizer's spectator guide covers the rest.

Is there prize money?

Yes: a $10,000 purse, split evenly between the pro men and pro women and paid five deep. Every other category gets awards five deep.
