Bear 100 course map and aid stations

One hundred miles across the Bear River Range in fall color, from the east bench of Logan to Bear Lake.

September 24 to 25, 2027 Logan to Garden City, Utah

The Bear 100 is a point to point 100 miler through the Bear River Range in northern Utah. It starts at 6 AM on a Friday at Hyrum Gibbons/Mount Logan Park in Logan and finishes at Conestoga Ranch in Garden City, near Bear Lake, with 36 hours to get there. The organizer picked late September for the red maples and yellow aspens.

The finish moved from Fish Haven, Idaho to Garden City in 2026, and the whole race is now in Utah. The map shows the 2026 course. The organizer's 2027 aid station sheet has the same aid stations at the same miles.

The runner's manual says there's no cell coverage in the canyon, and Beaver Mountain has none either. The organizer asks you to load the GPX into Gaia or a similar app as a backup to the course markings, because animals and people pull flags down. Download the map before you go, whether you're running or crewing. GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The first climb is the longest: 4,730 feet in the 10 miles from the park to the Logan Peak aid station, which sits at 8,868 feet, the high point of the race. Since 2026 the course takes the North Syncline singletrack instead of the South Syncline doubletrack, with views over Logan Canyon at sunrise. Three legs are 10 miles between aid: the two either side of Logan Peak, and Tony Grove to Franklin Basin.

Most of the first 75 miles is the old course. After Beaver Mountain you now turn south on the Stump Hollow singletrack to Peter Sinks, where the temperature hit -69°F in February 1985. Past a water stop you reach Burnt Fork, then drop down a fast, rugged dirt road into Garden City. The organizer swapped 10 miles of doubletrack for singletrack in the change, and the course has about 350 feet less climbing than before.

Getting in

Entry is by lottery on UltraSignup. For 2027 you apply between November 15 and December 10, 2026, and the draw is on December 19 at 7 PM MST. You're only charged if you're picked. The lottery fills 270 places, and the field is capped at 315. It also draws up to 300 more for the waiting list. For 2026, 886 people applied.

To apply you need an official 50 miler in under 16 hours, or a 100K, 100 or 200 miler inside its cutoff, finished between December 1, 2022 and December 1, 2026. Past Bear finishers get twice the tickets of first-timers, and your tickets double each year you apply without starting. You also owe 8 hours of trail work or race volunteering, done by September 15, 2027. Crewing and pacing don't count.

Getting to Logan

Logan is a university city less than two hours from Salt Lake City International Airport, with dozens of hotels within ten minutes of the start. Packet pickup is mandatory, at the start park on Thursday, September 23, from 3:30 to 6 PM. That's also the only time to hand in drop bags. A runner who hasn't picked up by 6:30 PM loses the spot to the waiting list, but a friend can pick up for you.

Don't leave your car in the park's lot overnight; the street nearby is fine if you keep clear of driveways and mailboxes. One school bus goes back to the start from the finish at about 6:30 PM on Saturday, for $25 plus tax, with no stops on the way. Otherwise find a ride: most people at the finish are heading back to Logan.

Crewing and pacing

Crews can meet you at Leatham Hollow, Tony Grove, Franklin Basin, Beaver Mountain Lodge, Burnt Fork and the finish, plus one of Right Hand Fork or Temple Fork. You choose which in a survey in early September, and your crew gets a pass for it. Each runner gets one crew vehicle per aid station. For Tony Grove your crew must first drive to Franklin Basin and wait there for a separate pass. Don't park on Highway 89 at Temple Fork.

Franklin Basin has free Starlink Wi-Fi from 12:30 to 10 PM, so crews can follow you on the tracker, which updates within 5 to 10 minutes. At Beaver Mountain the aid station is in the small ski patrol lodge north of the two main lodges.

Pacers can join from Right Hand Fork, mile 37.5. The organizer suggests starting them at Tony Grove, since parking at Right Hand Fork and Temple Fork is so tight. Runners over 60 can have a pacer from the start. You get one pacer at a time until the last mile, and they can't carry anything for you.

Weather and kit

The manual says late September is usually in the 70s or 80s by day and the 20s or 30s at night. A big storm blows through once or twice most Septembers, sometimes on race weekend, so pack for heat, snow and rain.

There's no mandatory gear, but bring headlamps. The race is cupless: carry a bottle or flask, or take the free collapsible cup at check-in. Aid stations don't give out ibuprofen or acetaminophen, so put any you want in a drop bag. The course is marked in pink with reflectors; blue ribbon means you've gone the wrong way.

Bear 100 FAQ

When is the Bear 100 2027?

Friday, September 24, 2027, starting at 6 AM in Logan. The cutoff is 36 hours, at 6 PM on Saturday, September 25.

Where does the Bear 100 finish now?

At Conestoga Ranch, a glamping resort in Garden City, Utah, near Bear Lake. The finish moved there from Fish Haven, Idaho in 2026. Runners get free showers on site; bring your own towel.

Is the Bear 100 a Western States or Hardrock qualifier?

Both. Western States lists the 2026 and 2027 races as qualifiers, finished inside 36 hours. On Hardrock's list, a 2026 or 2027 Bear finish counts for the 2028 Hardrock lottery. The Bear is also the one required race of the Rocky Mountain Slam.

Can you have a pacer at the Bear 100?

Yes, from Right Hand Fork at mile 37.5 to the finish, one at a time until the last mile. Runners over 60 may have a pacer from the start if they tell the race director.

Is there cell service on the Bear 100 course?

Not in the canyon, says the runner's manual, and none at Beaver Mountain. Crews get Wi-Fi at Franklin Basin and Beaver Mountain. Download the course map before you leave Logan.

What are the Bear 100 buckles?

A Wolverine buckle under 24 hours, a Grizzly between 24 and 30, and a Black Bear between 30 and 36. The course records are 17:11:51 for men, by Zach Garner in 2023, and 18:50:37 for women, by Kristin Johnson in 2026.
