Barry-Roubaix courses and aid stations

Four gravel races out of downtown Hastings, from the 18 mile Chiller to the unmarked Psycho Killer.

April 17, 2027 Hastings, Michigan

Barry-Roubaix runs on the back roads of Barry County, Michigan, starting and finishing in Hastings, the county seat. The organizer promises rolling gravel, pavement, a mile of rough two-track, rocks, sand, mud and possibly snow and ice. They call it one of the world's largest gravel road races, with a cap of 5,500 riders across the four distances, and in 2026 it was a round of the Michigan Gravel Race Series.

The 18, 36 and 62 have permanent signs. The 100 isn't signed at all, so you navigate it yourself. The distances, aid stations and cutoffs here are 2026's: the 2027 ones aren't out yet.

The organizer's safety plan says many places on the course have no cell service or very little. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The 2026 cue sheet has the Psycho Killer at 104.6 miles with over 7,000 feet of climbing. The organizer won't describe it ("Did you really think we'd spoil the surprise!"), though they do warn that it's designed to be extremely difficult and you'll probably have to walk at some point. Parts of it are more than 20 miles from both the start and an aid station. It isn't signed, so ride it from the GPX or the cue sheet. It crosses Camp Michawana private property, which is marked only for race week.

In 2026 everyone started together at 7 AM, escorted out of Hastings by the city police. A rear blinking light is required, and aero bars are allowed on this distance only. The cutoffs were 10:35 AM at McCallum Church (mile 35.4), 12:50 PM at Cedar Creek (mile 57.8) and 3:10 PM at the third aid station, Gardens Galore, at mile 81.5 on Bivens Road. We couldn't place Gardens Galore, so it isn't on the map. Finish in under 6.5 hours and you get a custom mug.

The 2026 Killer was 64.8 miles on its cue sheet, with about 4,000 feet of climbing. It starts on the same roads as the 36, then at about mile 9.5 turns onto Shaw Road, a two-track the organizer calls "a bit more rowdy" than Sager Road, with sand pits or mud holes depending on the weather. After Sager and The Wall, around mile 26.5, comes a section on Camp Michawana private property. It's only marked for race week, and the organizer asks you to ride it only then.

The aid stations are at McCallum Church (mile 22.5) and Cedar Creek (mile 45). The 2026 cutoffs were 12:15 PM at McCallum Church and 2 PM at Cedar Creek. The last gravel is 2.5 twisty miles of Cook Road, then a paved, gradual mile uphill to the finish.

The Thriller is the distance most riders choose. Its 2026 cue sheet runs 35.9 miles, with about 2,200 feet of climbing. You hit gravel about 1.5 miles in and go straight into the Three Sisters, a three-hill climb. At about mile 18 you turn onto Sager Road, a seasonal two-track that's usually rutted, with mud holes or sand. The Wall comes at mile 25 and Cemetery Hill at 26.7. The 18 and 62 merge in after that, and you finish on twisty Cook Road and a false flat up Green Street.

The one aid station is at mile 22, at the turn onto Otis Lake Road. The organizer suggests a gravel bike with 40 mm tires, or a rigid mountain bike with enough gears for the pavement. In 2026 a reroute around flooding on Quimby Road, near the end, added 0.75 mile.

The Chiller is 18.4 miles on its 2026 cue sheet, about 85% gravel and dirt, with about 1,200 feet of climbing. The organizer says it climbs more per mile than any other course. After 1.5 miles of pavement you're into the Three Sisters, so warm up first. At about mile 6.5 you turn left onto Hull Road while the longer races go straight on: miss the sign and you'll ride double the distance.

The aid station is at mile 9.3, on Anders Road. We couldn't place it, so it isn't on the map. Mountain, gravel and fat bikes all suit this course, and riders 18 and under race it free. The 2026 Quimby Road flood reroute added 0.75 mile here too.

Registration

Entry is on BikeReg, and registration for 2027 opens November 14. There's no race day entry and you don't need a license. Registration for 2026 opened on November 15, 2025, and the organizer announced it was sold out the next day, so sign up when it opens. The 18, 36 and 62 share one cap and the 100 has its own.

After it sells out, a waitlist opens on BikeReg: one for the 18, 36 and 62, and another for the 100. It's automatic, so you're charged and entered as soon as an entry comes to you. Take your name off if you change your mind. There are no refunds or deferrals, but you can transfer your entry through BikeReg before the deadline, and the American Cancer Society has entries for riders who fundraise.

In 2026 entry cost $79 for the 18, $99 for the 36, $109 for the 62 and $119 for the 100. Riders 18 and under raced the 18 and 36 free.

Getting to Hastings

The organizer puts Hastings about 40 minutes' drive from Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing, which all have plenty of hotels. The start and finish are downtown on Green Street at Church Street. Park where you can: city lots, side streets, the middle school, churches. Hastings is small enough to walk or ride everywhere from there.

In 2026 packet pickup was at Ace Hardware on South Boltwood Street on Friday from 2 to 8 PM and race morning from 5:30 to 9:45 AM, or the Sunday before at Cannonsburg Ski Area in Belmont. You have to collect your own packet, and you need ID. The Ace lot is closed to general parking on race morning. The city opens about 15 RV and camper spots in Tyden Park, first come, first served.

Aid stations and support

There's no crewing at Barry-Roubaix. You can't take hand-ups or help from friends or family anywhere on the course, and the organizer asks them to keep their cars off the course roads, Sager Road above all. Carry anything you need that the aid stations don't have.

The aid stations have volunteers, Skratch Labs drink and food, water, fruit, EMTs, a bike mechanic and a porta-john. For a ride back, call the SAG number on the back of your number plate, (616) 287-0574, and they'll take you to an aid station or back to Hastings. The roads stay open to traffic, so stop at stop signs, yield to cars, ride no more than two abreast and stay right of the yellow line.

Weather and what to ride

April in Hastings averages a high of 56.9°F and a low of 34.0°F, with 3.83 inches of precipitation, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The organizer warns that a Michigan spring day can be anything from 80°F and sunny to 35°F and heavy rain. The race runs snow, rain or shine, and the Shaw and Sager two-track is only rerouted if deep snow or ice makes it impassable, which the organizer says is very rare.

The FAQ suggests 700x34 to 50 mm gravel tires with a low tread, or fast-rolling 29 inch tires on a mountain bike. E-bikes and earbuds aren't allowed, and aero bars only on the 100. Pack a change of clothes for the after-party.

Barry-Roubaix FAQ

When is Barry-Roubaix 2027?

Saturday, April 17, 2027, in Hastings, Michigan. It's usually the third Saturday in April, moved when that clashes with Easter. In 2026 the 100 started at 7 AM and the other distances in waves from 9 AM. The 2027 start times aren't out yet.

When does Barry-Roubaix registration open?

November 14, on BikeReg. The organizer announced the 2026 race was sold out the day after registration opened, so be ready. After that you can join the waitlist or buy an entry from someone transferring out.

Is the Barry-Roubaix course marked?

The 18, 36 and 62 are, with permanent signs and race day arrows: blue for the 18, yellow for the 36 and red for the 62. The 100 mile Psycho Killer isn't marked at all, so load the GPX or carry the cue sheet.

What are the cutoffs at Barry-Roubaix?

Only the 62 and 100 have them. In 2026 the 100 had to reach McCallum Church by 10:35 AM, Cedar Creek by 12:50 PM and Gardens Galore by 3:10 PM, and the 62 had to reach McCallum Church by 12:15 PM and Cedar Creek by 2 PM. Miss one and a SAG vehicle drives you back to Hastings. Timing comes down around 5 PM so Green Street can reopen.

Is there cell service on the Barry-Roubaix course?

Not everywhere. The safety plan says many places on the course have no service or very little, and tells you to text 911 in an emergency when a call won't go through. Download the map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.
