Arc of Attrition course maps and aid stations

Four winter races on the South West Coast Path in Cornwall, all finishing at Perranporth Airfield, from a 22 km loop to 173 km around the tip of the county.

January 22 to 24, 2027 South West Coast Path, Cornwall, England

The Arc of Attrition is a January ultra on the South West Coast Path, the National Trail around Cornwall's coast. MudCrew started it in 2015 as a 100 miler with 49 runners, and it joined the UTMB World Series in January 2025.

For 2027 the event moves its base to Perranporth Airfield, where all four races finish. The 100M starts at Coverack on the south coast and follows the "arc" past Lizard Point and Land's End, then up the Atlantic side. The 100K starts at Land's End, the 50K at Harlyn Bay, and the 20K is a loop from the airfield.

Much of the 100M is run in the dark, with long stretches of coast between aid stations. The organizer lists the spots where you need care to stay on the official path, from Kynance Cove to Godrevy Head. Download the course map before you go: your phone's GPS shows where you are on the line without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Arc of Attrition by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

The 100M stays on the South West Coast Path for all 173 km, starting Friday at 1 PM in Coverack and rounding Lizard Point and Land's End before turning north up the Atlantic coast. It climbs 5,507 m over remote headlands and in and out of coves. The organizer tells 100M runners to be ready for up to two nights out on the path.

The organizer lists where to take care to stay on the official path: Kynance Cove, Cape Cornwall, Botallack, Zennor Head, Hayle, Mexico Towans, the Dunes of Doom and Godrevy Head. The longest gap is Pendeen to Lelant, 28 km past Zennor with nothing in between. Your drop bag waits at Land's End. Finish under 25 hours for a black buckle, under 31 for gold; everyone else gets silver.

The 100K starts at Land's End on Saturday at 10 AM and runs the last 83 km of the 100M course: Cape Cornwall, Botallack and Zennor Head, then through Hayle and the Mexico Towans dunes to Godrevy. It finishes at Perranporth Airfield after 82.7 km and 2,708 m of climbing.

The bigger aid stations are about 20 miles apart, and the stretch from Pendeen to your drop bag at Lelant is 28 km. Depending on your pace, the organizer says, the later part is run in the dark. No crew is allowed anywhere on the course.

The 50K is new for 2027. It starts at Harlyn Bay on Sunday at 9 AM, rounds Trevose Head, and heads south through Porthcothan, Mawgan Porth, Newquay and Holywell Bay to finish at Perranporth Airfield. It's 49.4 km with 1,458 m of climbing.

There are three aid stations and no crew. The organizer flags Porthcothan Bay, Mawgan Porth, Porth, Newquay, Polly Joke, Holywell Bay and Perranporth as places where you need to watch that you stay on the coast path.

Registration

Entries opened on 13 July 2026, two days early for runners with a UTMB Index, and it's first come, first served, with no lottery and no waitlist. When this page was checked the 100K had sold out and the 100M, 50K and 20K were still open.

You don't need a UTMB Index to enter, but for the 100M the organizer recommends an index of at least 380 in the 50K, 100K or 100M category, since that's the pace the cutoffs are set at. You must be 20 or older for the 100M, 100K and 50K, and 17 for the 20K. Entries can't be transferred or deferred, and refunds come only through the cancellation insurance offered when you register. You can switch distance until 18 December 2026.

Getting to Perranporth

Perranporth Airfield is at Trevellas, near St Agnes. Perranporth itself is just off the A3075, which joins the A30. The event car park is at the airfield; you can't sleep in your car or a tent there, and you book your own accommodation. Cornwall Airport Newquay is 20 to 25 minutes away by car, and the nearest railway stations are Newquay, about 8 miles off, and Truro, which has trains from London Paddington.

The 100M, 100K and 50K start elsewhere, and coaches take runners there from the airfield, leaving 3 to 4 hours before the start. They're mandatory for the 100M and advised for the others. Nobody can drive or be dropped off at a start, and spectators aren't allowed at the 100M start in Coverack.

Crew, pacers and drop bags

Only the 100M allows a crew: one person per runner, wearing the supporter wristband, at the aid stations in Porthleven, Land's End, Lelant and Portreath. The organizer strongly advises 100M runners to have one, with their own transport. The 100K, 50K and 20K allow no crew at all, though the organizer still wants you to have someone at the finish to drive you home.

There are no pacers. Running with anyone outside the zones 500 m either side of an aid station earns a penalty. Drop bags, in the 30 litre bag UTMB gives you at bib collection, go to Land's End for the 100M and Lelant for the 100K, with no poles inside.

Weather and kit

January at Camborne, a little inland from the course's north coast stretch, averages a high of 9.2°C and a low of 4.9°C, with 120.6 mm of rain over about 17 wet days (Met Office, 1991 to 2020). The organizer warns of cold, heavy rain, fog, strong winds, hail and snow, and says your kit must keep you safe for 24 hours outdoors.

On the 2026 kit list, which the race site still links, the cold weather kit was part of the mandatory kit, and the organizer could drop items 24 hours before the start. The 100M and 100K need 1.5 litres of water, two headtorches of at least 300 lumens with spare batteries, a red tail light, a survival bag (not a foil blanket), a baseplate compass, waterproof trousers and two pairs of gloves. Your phone must stay on with the LiveTrail app running. Bring a bowl and cutlery if you want the hot food.

Arc of Attrition FAQ

When is the Arc of Attrition 2027?

22 to 24 January 2027. The 100M starts at Coverack on Friday the 22nd at 1 PM, the 100K at Land's End on Saturday at 10 AM, and the 50K and 20K on Sunday the 24th.

Is the Arc of Attrition a Western States qualifier?

The 100M is, if you finish in under 36 hours, an hour inside the Arc's own 37 hour limit. Western States lists the January 2026 race as a qualifier for its 2027 lottery, and the January 2027 race for its 2028 lottery.

What are the time limits at the Arc of Attrition?

37 hours for the 100M, 16 for the 100K, 9 for the 50K and 4 for the 20K. The starts go in waves, and cutoffs are set from the last wave, so the 100M and 100K both close at 2:30 AM on Sunday.

Can you have a crew or pacer at the Arc of Attrition?

A crew only on the 100M, and only at Porthleven, Land's End, Lelant and Portreath. Pacers aren't allowed on any distance.

How hard is the Arc 100?

The organizer says the 100 mile kept a 50% DNF rate as it grew to around 500 entries. It climbs 5,507 m on cliff paths in January, with the cutoffs set for a UTMB Index of 380.

Can you get the Arc of Attrition GPX?

The organizer says the GPX for each race is on its race page, under the map, with 'Export as GPX'. Most of the route is the public South West Coast Path, so you can train on it; the organizer suggests carrying an Ordnance Survey map when you do.
