Angeles Crest 100 course map and aid stations

A 100.8 mile loop from Altadena to Mt. Hillyer and back through the San Gabriel Mountains, with a new 100K on the same day.

October 2 to 3, 2027 Altadena, California

The Angeles Crest 100 has been run in the San Gabriel Mountains since 1986, and the organizer counts it among the first five 100 mile races in the United States. For most of those years it went point to point, from Wrightwood to Altadena. In 2026 winter storm damage to Highway 2 and recent fires moved it: it now starts and finishes at Loma Alta Park in Altadena, turns around near Mt. Hillyer and comes home over Mt. Wilson. The 2027 race keeps that course and adds a separate 100K the same day.

The map is drawn from the organizer's course file. Its course page offers it as the 2027 GPX, though the file itself is named for 2026. The race says 2027 runs the loop it introduced in 2026. The 100K's aid stations are the organizer's estimates.

The race rules call cell service limited and unreliable on the whole course, and tell runners and crews not to rely on a phone for safety, route finding, runner tracking or driving directions. Download the map before you go, since your phone's GPS shows where you are without a signal.

You climb from about 1,300 feet at Loma Alta Park to about 5,500 at the Josephine Peak aid station, mile 15.3, then drop past Red Box to Newcomb Saddle and climb on through Shortcut and Chilao to the turnaround at Mt. Hillyer. The way back retraces the route to Newcomb, then dives to Chantry Flats, at about 2,200 feet, and climbs about 3,500 feet in 6.1 miles to Mt. Wilson before the long descent to the finish. The course tops out at about 6,200 feet near Mt. Hillyer.

The first stretch, Loma Alta Park to Clear Creek, is 11.2 miles with no aid. Josephine Peak and Newcomb have no cutoff, because getting a runner out of either is so hard. Newcomb, Sam Merrill and Millard sit behind locked gates, and if you drop there you may wait until the station closes for a ride. Pacers join at Chilao-1, mile 49.1.

The 100K follows the 100 mile out through Clear Creek, Josephine Peak and Red Box to Newcomb Saddle. There it skips the trip north to Mt. Hillyer and heads down to Chantry Flats, then takes the same climb to Mt. Wilson and the descent past Sam Merrill and Millard to Loma Alta Park. It starts at 7:00 AM with an 18.5 hour limit, so the final cutoff is 1:30 AM Sunday.

These are estimates. UltraSignup gives 61.6 miles and 13,271 feet of climbing, and the race's own registration page says about 62.5 miles and 11,800 feet. The organizer will confirm the aid stations, cutoffs and drop bag spots once its operating plans are final. There are no pacers and no crews in the 100K.

The lottery and what you need to start

The 2027 lottery runs from October 12 to October 26, 2026, closing at 11:59 PM Pacific, and the entrants and waitlist come out on October 30. About 210 places go through the lottery. Your card is charged only if you're drawn, and once it is, you're in: you can't decline or defer. Previous finishes, earlier unlucky lottery tries, volunteering, entering Solo and chasing four or more finishes in a row can all improve your odds. Waitlisted runners get an invitation from UltraSignup and can say no before they're charged.

To start the 100 mile you need an official finish of 50 miles or more between January 1, 2026 and September 2, 2027, and eight hours of trail work by that September date. If you live in Southern California south of Fresno, the trail work has to be with AC100 in the Angeles National Forest. You can enter before you've run your qualifier.

Refunds are 50% through April 1, 2027 and 25% through August 1, and entries can't be transferred. The 100K has its own registration, separate from the lottery, and asks for four hours of trail work.

Getting to Loma Alta Park

Altadena sits right above Pasadena, about 14 miles from downtown Los Angeles, and the race starts and finishes at Loma Alta Park there. Because the course comes back to the start, there's no shuttle and no ride back from Wrightwood to arrange.

You'll want to be in Altadena on Friday: you pick up your own packet with a photo ID, and drop bags are collected at Loma Alta Park on Friday, October 1, 2027, from 8:00 to 10:30 AM. Shortcut and Chilao each get two bags, one per visit, marked Shortcut-1, Shortcut-2, Chilao-1 and Chilao-2. The race links a booking page for lodging from its site.

Crewing and pacing

Each runner gets one crew vehicle, with the race's vehicle pass on display, and it also needs a Forest Service Adventure Pass ($5 a day or $30 a year) or an America the Beautiful pass to park in the Angeles National Forest. Crews can meet runners at Red Box, Shortcut, Chilao, Chantry Flats and Mt. Wilson. Mt. Hillyer and Millard can be reached by car, but crews aren't allowed there. Many stops are along Highway 2: don't park over the white line, and don't drive alongside your runner on the road sections. A crew infraction costs your runner an hour at the aid station, and a second one disqualifies them.

Pacers start at Chilao-1 and can only swap at Chilao-2 and Chantry Flats, one at a time. Runners 65 and older can have a pacer for the whole race. Solo runners have no crew and no pacer, only drop bags and the aid stations.

Weather and the trail

In 2026 the race ran in October for the first time since 2008. In Pasadena, just below the start, October averages a high of 83°F and a low of 56°F; on Mt. Wilson it's 72°F and 51°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals.

The course is marked with yellow ribbon and biodegradable powder, and the ribbons on night sections carry reflective tape. Trekking poles are allowed. Where the course crosses Highway 2 there are flaggers at the major crossings, and you cross only when they tell you to.

AC100 FAQ

When is the Angeles Crest 100 in 2027?

Saturday, October 2, 2027. The 100 mile starts at 5:00 AM at Loma Alta Park in Altadena and has 33 hours, to 2:00 PM Sunday. The 100K starts at 7:00 AM the same day.

How do you get into the Angeles Crest 100?

Through the lottery, open October 12 to 26, 2026, which fills about 210 places. The rest go to volunteers, sponsors, Sterling Silver Ticket winners and other race commitments. The top two men and women at each Sterling Silver Ticket race get a place, and still pay the entry fee and do the trail work. Each aid station captain can nominate one runner from their volunteers.

Is the Angeles Crest 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Western States lists the October 2027 Angeles Crest 100 mile, finished in 33 hours, as a qualifier for its 2028 lottery. The 100K isn't on the list.

Can you have a pacer at the Angeles Crest 100?

In the crewed division, from Chilao-1 at mile 49.1 to the finish, one pacer at a time. You can switch pacers only at Chilao-2 and Chantry Flats. Runners 65 and older can have one from the start. Solo runners and 100K runners can't have one.

Why doesn't the Angeles Crest 100 start in Wrightwood anymore?

Winter storm damage to Highway 2 and recent fires led the race to a loop from Loma Alta Park in 2026, routed around the Eaton Fire closure area, and 2027 keeps it. The organizer says it wants to return to the point to point route when access and safety allow.

Is there cell service on the Angeles Crest course?

Not much. The race rules call it limited and unreliable throughout the course, varying by provider and place. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.
