Trail Alsace by UTMB course maps and aid stations

Castles, vineyards and Vosges forest between Lac Blanc and the ramparts of Obernai, over five races and a youth race in mid-May.

May 13 to 16, 2027 Obernai, Alsace, France

Trail Alsace by UTMB, first run in 2023 and also known as Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB, is a UTMB World Series event on the Alsace side of the Vosges, across both departments of Alsace. Every adult race finishes on the ramparts of Obernai.

The 100M starts on Friday evening at the Lac Blanc mountain resort, above 1,100 m, and runs north along the Vosges past Haut-Koenigsbourg to Obernai. The 100K starts that morning in Orschwiller, below Haut-Koenigsbourg. The 29K and 50K start in Barr, the 18K is an evening race out of Obernai, and the Trail des Ecuyers is a 10 km race for juniors and cadets in Châtenois.

The organizer sends out the GPX only a week or two before the race, because the course crosses private land. The map here shows the 2026 courses, aid stations and cutoffs, so you can plan now. Download it to your phone before you go: the markers are reflective, and the rule is to turn back if you can't see one.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with Trail Alsace by UTMB. Check the official site before you enter or race.

You start from the Lac Blanc resort, pass the Tour du Faudé and climb the Brézouard through a quieter, more remote stretch. Then it's ridgelines, forest and clearings with views over the Alsace plain, through Aubure, the highest village in Alsace, to Haut-Koenigsbourg at 60 km. From there you drop to the foothills and work north through wine villages and castle ruins, Landsberg and Bernstein among them, to Mont Sainte-Odile and the Heidenkopf.

Your drop bag is at Châtenois (68 km), and Châtenois and Barr serve hot food. The map, distances and cutoffs are the 2026 course's. The 2027 race page gives 158 km and 5,100 m of climbing.

The 100K starts in Orschwiller, a hundred meters from the line between Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin. After the vineyard paths to Saint-Hippolyte you climb toward the Schaentzel manor and into the grounds of Haut-Koenigsbourg, then join the 100M's route north. The last part is the 50K's: Mont Sainte-Odile and its pagan wall, the Heidenkopf, then Rosheim and the finish.

Your drop bag waits at Barr (61 km), where there's hot food and a rest area. The map, distances and cutoffs are 2026's. The 2027 race page gives 108 km and 3,900 m of climbing.

From Barr the 50K leaves the vines for dense forest, passing the Landsberg and Birkenfels castles on the way to Mont Sainte-Odile. Below it you pass Niedermunster Abbey, then climb to the Heidenkopf, next to an ancient Celtic site. The Mündel Tower gives a 360° view if you have the legs to climb it. The last stretch runs through vineyards to Rosheim and on to Obernai.

Crews can't help you at Niedermunster, so the first support is at Klingenthal (24.6 km). Stops and cutoffs are from 2026.

The 29K climbs hard out of Barr into the first Vosges foothills, past Landsberg and Birkenfels. You then follow the Chemin de Croix, the Way of the Cross, with its ceramic tiles, up to Hohenbourg Abbey on Mont Sainte-Odile. The descent past the Niedermunster ruins is fast, and the last aid is a drinks stop in Ottrott before Obernai. Stops and cutoffs are from 2026.

The Ronde des Pages starts at 8 PM at the Halle aux Blés in the middle of Obernai. You cross the plain through vineyards and orchards, refuel at Ottrott, then follow the Ehn river for about 4 km on forest trails. The last kilometer takes you onto the ramparts, and you finish under the lit arch at the foot of the tower. Bring a head torch. Poles aren't allowed in this race.

For juniors (born 2008 or 2009) and cadets (born 2010 or 2011). It starts in the medieval quarter of Châtenois, goes through the Witches' Tower and up steep singletrack to the Hahnenberg, then comes back down fast above the village vineyards. New in 2027, younger runners born in 2012 or 2013 get their own 3.7 km course, which isn't on the map.

Registration and the PPS

Entry for 2027 opened on August 4, 2026, two days early for runners with a UTMB Index, then to everyone on August 6. It's first come, first served, with no lottery and no waitlist. When this page was checked, the 100M was still open and the 100K, 50K, 29K and 18K had sold out. The 100K, 29K and 18K pages link to charity bibs.

You can't transfer your bib to another runner or defer it to the next year. Up to four weeks out you can move to a shorter race, but without a refund.

You also need a PPS code, from the French athletics federation's online health course, entered in your MyUTMB account three months before the race, and insurance that covers search and rescue in France, which the entry fee doesn't.

Getting to Obernai

Obernai sits at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, 25 km from Strasbourg. Strasbourg-Entzheim airport is less than 25 km away, and the EuroAirport at Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg about 100 km. By train it's a 25 minute TER ride from Strasbourg, with departures every 30 to 60 minutes, and the station is a 6 minute walk from the center. From Paris, the TGV reaches Strasbourg in 1h50.

Your entry includes transport to the start line, which matters for the 100M at Lac Blanc and the 100K at Orschwiller.

Crewing

Your race pack holds one crew pass, and only the person carrying it can help you, with no more than a 30 liter bag of food and clothes. Assistance zones run from 500 m before an aid station to 500 m after, and crews can enter one hour before you're expected. In the 2026 course data, every aid station on the 100M and 100K allowed crew. On the 50K and 29K the Mont Sainte-Odile aid station, Niedermunster on the map, is closed to supporters.

There are no pacers: being accompanied outside the zones near aid stations costs you a time penalty. In 2026 crews booked shuttles that looped from Obernai to the aid stations; the 2027 shuttle details aren't out yet.

Weather and mandatory kit

May in Strasbourg averages highs around 21°C and lows around 10°C (1991 to 2020 normals). The organizer warns that May in Alsace can swing quickly from over 30°C to cold, with rain, hail or even snow, and the 100M starts above 1,100 m.

For the 100M and 100K, the 2026 kit list included a phone with the LiveTrail app and roaming switched on, two headlamps, 1 liter of water, a hooded waterproof jacket, long leggings, a warm second layer, a hat, warm waterproof gloves, a survival blanket and a 15 cl cup, since aid stations hand out no cups. Keep the phone on: airplane mode is a 15 minute penalty. The organizer can add a hot or cold weather kit before bib pickup.

Trail Alsace FAQ

When is Trail Alsace 2027?

May 13 to 16, 2027. The 100M starts Friday the 14th at 5 PM from Lac Blanc and the 100K at 7 AM from Orschwiller. The 29K, 18K and youth race are on Saturday the 15th, and the 50K on Sunday the 16th.

Can I still enter Trail Alsace 2027?

When this page was checked in October 2026, only the 100M (and the youth race) still had places. The 100K, 50K, 29K and 18K had sold out, and there is no waitlist. Charity bibs are listed for the 100K, 29K and 18K.

How many Running Stones is Trail Alsace worth?

4 for the 100M, 3 for the 100K, 2 for the 50K and 1 each for the 29K and 18K.

Can you have a pacer at Trail Alsace?

No. Nobody can run with you outside the marked zones around aid stations, and it's a time penalty if they do. One crew member with a crew pass can help you inside the assistance zones.

Where are the drop bags on the 100M and 100K?

The 100M's is at Châtenois, 68 km in, and the 100K's at Barr, 61 km in. Both go on to the finish in Obernai. On the 50K and 29K your bag goes straight to the finish.

When is the Trail Alsace GPX released?

One to two weeks before the race, by email, because the courses cross private land. Until then, the map on this page shows the 2026 courses.
