UTMB course map, aid stations and cutoffs

One lap of Mont Blanc, 174 km and 9,700 m of climbing, from Chamonix through Italy and Switzerland and back.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in August Chamonix, Haute-Savoie

The UTMB has run since 2003 and is the 100 mile final of the UTMB World Series. It starts on a Friday evening in Chamonix and goes all the way around Mont Blanc: down the valley to Saint-Gervais, over Col de la Seigne into Italy, through Courmayeur, over Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland, and back into France at Vallorcine for the last climb to La Flégère. The time limit is 45 hours 30 minutes, and the organizer tells you to be ready for one or two nights out on the course, depending on your pace.

The map shows the 2026 course and its checkpoints; the 2027 course isn't out yet. You need a phone with the LiveTrail app and roaming in all three countries, and the rules warn that in some places only emergency calls go through. Download the map before you go, so GPS still shows you where you are when the signal drops.

The first night takes you over Col de Voza to Saint-Gervais and Les Contamines, then up past the Croix du Bonhomme refuge (2,448 m) and down to Les Chapieux. La Balme, on the way up, has a cutoff at 04:00 Saturday but no food. To spare the wildlife in the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve, one of your two headlamps must have a red light pointing forward. From Les Chapieux it's 15.7 km over Col de la Seigne (2,511 m) to Lac Combal, then along the Arête du Mont-Favre and down to Courmayeur at 81 km, the first drop bag.

The second half climbs to Refuge Bertone and runs on past Refuge Bonatti to Arnouvaz, then over Grand Col Ferret (2,527 m) into Switzerland. Arnouvaz to La Fouly is 14.5 km, and Champex-Lac to Trient, over La Giète, is 16.5 km with no aid station in between. After Trient come Les Tseppes and Vallorcine, then the last climb to La Flégère and the descent into Chamonix. Checrouit, Bertone and La Flégère have drinks only.

The distances and cutoffs are the 2026 race's, which LiveTrail put at 173.6 km.

Getting an entry

To enter the lottery you need a valid UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category and at least one Running Stone earned in the two years before the lottery closes. Stones come only from finishing UTMB World Series races, and Majors give double. They add up, and each one is another chance in the draw. Once you're drawn, your count goes back to zero. Finishing UTMB itself earns none.

The top three men and women at each World Series 100M get a direct place, and the Majors send their top ten and the best in each age group. In 2026 the entry fee was €479 plus an 8% administration fee, and a carbon contribution was mandatory. Entries can't be transferred, and you only get a refund with cancellation insurance. You also need insurance that covers search, rescue and evacuation in France, Italy and Switzerland.

The 2027 dates and registration weren't out when this page was checked.

Getting to Chamonix

Geneva airport is about an hour and a half away by bus or by train from Geneva Cornavin. Lyon Saint-Exupéry is about two and a half hours away. By train, Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet connects to the Mont-Blanc Express up the valley.

The organizer asks you not to rent a car. The town car parks are full during race week, and the valley's buses and trains get you around.

Crewing and drop bags

Crew can help at four aid stations: Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Champex-Lac and Vallorcine. Only one person per runner is allowed, in the area set aside for it, and they can hand you a bag of up to 30 liters. Beyond that, they may only give you a massage or treat a blister while you sit in a chair. Any other medical help is forbidden. There are no pacers. Running with anyone outside the spectator zones near aid stations costs 15 minutes each time a marshal sees it.

Roads to Les Contamines, Saint-Gervais, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex, Col de la Forclaz, Trient and Vallorcine are closed to cars, and the organizer's UTMB Mobility coaches are the only way to follow the race. In 2026 a pass cost €26 for France, €31 for Italy and €36 for Switzerland for one adult, sold from June 9 to July 12. Vallorcine can still be reached by train.

You get one 30 liter drop bag at race-pack pick-up. In 2026 it waited at Courmayeur and Champex-Lac. Poles aren't allowed in it.

Weather and what to carry

August in Chamonix averages a high of 23.1°C and a low of 8.7°C (1981 to 2010 normals). The organizer warns that it can pass 30°C or fall to -10°C above 2,000 m, with rain, hail or snow, and that your kit has to get you through one or two nights outside.

The kit list includes two headlamps with spare power, a hooded waterproof jacket, waterproof overpants, a warm second layer, a beanie, warm waterproof gloves, a survival blanket, a whistle, at least 1 liter of water (1.5 is recommended) and a 15 cl cup. Aid stations hand out no disposable cups. If you start with poles, you carry them to the finish.

UTMB FAQ

When is UTMB 2027?

The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when this page was checked. The 2026 race started at 19:45 on Friday, August 28, and its time limit ran to Sunday the 30th, at the end of a race week from August 24 to 30.

How do you get into UTMB?

Through the lottery, with a valid UTMB Index in 100K or 100M and at least one Running Stone from the last two years, or with a direct place earned at a UTMB World Series race or Major.

How long is UTMB and how much climbing is there?

174 km and 9,700 m of climbing, as the organizer gives it, with a 45 hour 30 minute limit. In 2026 Ben Dhiman won in 18:16:29 and Blandine L'Hirondel in 21:54:49.

Can you have a pacer at UTMB?

No. Being accompanied outside the spectator zones near aid stations is against the rules and costs 15 minutes each time. One crew member can meet you at Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Champex-Lac and Vallorcine.

Do you get Running Stones for finishing UTMB?

No. In 2026 the UTMB World Series Finals gave no Running Stones. Finishing does give you a UTMB Index in the 100M category.

Is there cell service on the UTMB course?

You must carry a smartphone with the LiveTrail app and roaming for France, Italy and Switzerland, and keep it on: airplane mode costs 15 minutes. The rules also warn that some areas only allow emergency calls.
