Tor des Géants course maps, life bases and cutoffs

A 330 km loop of the Aosta Valley from Courmayeur, and four sister races that finish in the same place.

September 10 to 19, 2027 Courmayeur, Aosta Valley, Italy

The Tor des Géants starts and finishes in Courmayeur, at the foot of Mont Blanc, and in between it goes all the way around the Aosta Valley. It was first run in 2010. The first half follows the Alta Via 2 under Gran Paradiso, the second the Alta Via 1 under Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. There are no stages: you have 150 hours, and you decide when to eat and when to sleep.

The race is the centre of TORX, ten days of five races. The TOR450 Tor des Glaciers is a longer, wilder loop, and in 2026 it went out two days earlier. The TOR130 Tot Dret, TOR100 Cervino Monte Bianco and TOR30 Passage au Malatrà start elsewhere in the valley and run the last part of the Tor des Géants route to the same finish.

The organizer publishes the GPX and tells you to study it before you start, and the TOR450 isn't marked at all. The race tracks runners by satellite because parts of the route have no cell coverage. Download the course map to your phone before you leave Courmayeur, since GPS shows where you are without a signal.

This is an unofficial guide: Goat Maps isn't affiliated with TOR330 Tor des Géants. Check the official site before you enter or race.

It's sold as 330 km and 24,000 m of climbing, but the 2026 timetable measures 336.5 km and 26,182 m. The loop heads south past La Thuile into the Gran Paradiso valleys, down to Donnas at 323 m, then north under Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn and back west over Col Malatrà to Courmayeur. The high point is Col Loson, 3,295 m, on the 16.9 km between Eaux Rousses and Rifugio Vittorio Sella. Goilles Dessous to Rifugio Dondena, over the Finestra di Champorcher, is another long one at 16.2 km.

The six life bases are Valgrisenche, Cogne, Donnas, Gressoney, Valtournenche and Ollomont. Each has a cutoff to get in and another to get out, and your TOR bag waits at every one. In 2026 the race started in two waves, at 10:00 and noon on Sunday, and the second wave's cutoffs were two hours later all the way to the finish. The times here are the first wave's.

Sold as 450 km and 32,000 m, it measured 441.1 km and 35,010 m on the 2026 timetable. Most of it follows the Alte Vie 3 and 4, on little-known trails far from the usual trekking routes, over passes like Col Loson (3,297 m) and Col du Mont Gelé, with several equipped sections. There's no marking beyond the regional trail signs, so a handheld GPS with the official track is mandatory, along with route maps, an altimeter and a compass.

You stop at partner refuges, where sleeping, food and showers are free, and at three life bases: Cogne, Donnas and Gressoney. Some legs are long: Rifugio Elisabetta to Rifugio Deffeyes is 29.8 km, and Albergo Paramont to Rifugio Mario Bezzi 30.2 km. There are only 200 places, and you need a TOR330 finish in under 130 hours to enter.

In 2026 the Tot Dret started at 21:00 on Tuesday from Lake Gover in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. It mostly follows the Tor des Géants route through Champoluc, Valtournenche and Oyace to Courmayeur. It's sold as 130 km and 12,000 m; the 2026 timetable gave 136.1 km and 10,295 m. Oyace is the one life base, where your bag waits. The organizer sets the cutoffs at 3.02 km/h for the slowest runners, with 44 hours to finish, and 100 places in the next year's TOR330 are kept for its finishers.

The TOR100 left Breuil-Cervinia at 21:00 on Wednesday in 2026. It joins the Tor des Géants route at Rifugio Barmasse, the first refreshment point, at 11.8 km. From there it's the same trail to the finish, with the life base at Oyace. Sold as 100 km and 8,000 m, it was 106.0 km and 7,824 m on the 2026 timetable, with a 40 hour limit. Its finishers have 50 reserved places in the next TOR330.

The TOR30 climbs from Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses to Col Malatrà at 2,921 m and drops past Rifugio Bonatti and Mont de la Saxe to Courmayeur, 29.6 km and 2,000 m on the 2026 timetable. That year it started at 10:00 on Saturday. There are three refreshment points, a cutoff of noon at Merdeux, 8.6 km in, and 8 hours to finish by 18:00.

The organizer runs a free shuttle to the start from Courmayeur and Aosta if you book it. Unlike the longer races, it's open from age 18.

Registration and the lottery

For the TOR330 you pre-register in the first half of February, paying a €10 fee you don't get back. If more people pre-register than there are places, the organizer draws names on random.org, with country quotas: every country on the list gets at least two runners, and Italians are capped at 30%. You hear by the end of February and pay between March 1 and 15. Finishers of the TORX eXperience races, including the TOR130 and TOR100, get reserved places (PAX) and register in January. A few charity and eco bibs cost €2,000.

The TOR450, TOR130, TOR100 and TOR30 open on March 1 and close on March 15 or when full, with no waiting list. The 2026 fees were €1,150 for the TOR450, €990 for the TOR330, €260 for the TOR130, €230 for the TOR100 and €70 for the TOR30. Entries can't be transferred or moved to the next year, and you must upload a sports medical certificate by August 1.

The organizer has set TORX 2027 for September 10 to 19.

Getting to Courmayeur

The organizer puts the Aosta Valley less than two hours from Geneva, Turin and Milan. Courmayeur is at the Italian end of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, so Chamonix is just through the mountain, and the race lists an airport transfer partner.

TOR330 and TOR450 runners pick up their bibs at the Forum Sport Center in Courmayeur. The TOR130, TOR100 and TOR30 start in other valleys, hand out bibs in their start towns, and include a shuttle in the entry fee.

Crewing, pacing and drop bags

You can have one assistant, who needs a pass from the organizer and may help you only at refreshment points and life bases, in the areas set aside for it. They can bring clothes, shoes and food, but they can't go inside a life base, and any help from a car or camper gets you disqualified. Pacing is banned outright: running alongside a runner for 50 m or more counts.

Your TOR bag travels from life base to life base. If your crew carries your spare kit instead, you give up the TOR bag for the whole race. A satellite tracker is included for the TOR450; on the TOR330 you can rent one for €100, plus a €100 deposit.

Weather and what to carry

In Aosta, at 547 m, September averages highs of 23°C and lows of 12°C, by the 1991 to 2020 normals. The course goes much higher. The regulations warn of wind, cold, rain, snow and ice above 3,000 m, and of heat on the low passages.

Everyone carries a cup (the refreshment points don't hand out plastic ones), a phone that stays on, ID or a health card, two survival blankets, food and water. Every race but the TOR30 also needs two head torches with spare batteries. Crampons, a warm hooded jacket, waterproofs, a hat and gloves can stay in your TOR bag, but the race direction can make you carry them. Healthcare in Italy isn't free and a helicopter rescue can be billed to you, so carry your EU health card or your insurer's guarantee letter.

Tor des Géants FAQ

When is Tor des Géants 2027?

The organizer has set TORX 2027 for September 10 to 19, but the race pages still showed the 2026 schedule when this page was checked. In 2026 the TORX week ran from September 11 to 20, and the TOR330 started on Sunday, September 13, with a finish cutoff of 18:00 on Saturday the 19th (16:00 for the first wave).

How do you get into the Tor des Géants?

Mostly through a lottery. You pre-register in February, the organizer draws names with country quotas, and the lucky ones pay in March. You can also earn a reserved place by finishing a TORX eXperience race, such as the TOR130 or TOR100.

Is the Tor des Géants a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing the TOR330 in under 132 hours qualifies, and Western States lists both the 2026 and 2027 editions. The TOR130 (under 44 hours) and TOR100 (under 38 hours) qualify too.

How long is the Tor des Géants really?

The name says 330 km and the race page 24,000 m of climbing. The 2026 timetable measured 336.5 km and 26,182 m, and the regulations give about 350 km and 25,000 m as ITRA rates it.

Can you have a pacer or crew at the Tor des Géants?

Is there cell service on the Tor des Géants?

Not everywhere. The regulations say the race uses satellite trackers so it can follow runners where there's no cell coverage, and you must keep your phone on for the race direction. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS works without a signal.
