Paraty Brazil by UTMB course maps and aid stations

Six races that finish in the colonial centre of Paraty, from a 7 km town run to a night start over Pedra da Macela.

September 23 to 26, 2027 Paraty, Rio de Janeiro

Paraty Brazil by UTMB is the UTMB World Series stop in Paraty, a colonial port on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state. Every race but the PTR 17 starts in the historic centre, and all six finish there. The PTR 108 and PTR 58 climb out of town into the Atlantic Forest of the Serra da Bocaina, cross Pedra da Macela (1,840 m by the organizer's figure, on the border with São Paulo state) and come back down the Gold Trail, a stone-paved mule road built to carry gold to the port. The PTR 34, 25 and 17 stay in the foothills and farms behind town, and the RUN 7 never leaves it. In 2026, 3,339 runners started across the six races and 3,205 finished.

The map and aid stations below are the 2026 courses, which the race pages still carry; the organizer hasn't posted the 2027 ones yet. The regulation talks about parts of the course where only emergency calls get through, and the organizer suggests loading the GPX on your watch or phone as a safety measure. Download the map before you go: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

Despite the name, the organizer lists the 2027 PTR 108 as 101 km with about 4,850 m of climbing; the race page's profile of the 2026 course measures 102.2 km. You start at 7 PM on Friday and run north through the night to the Taquari neighbourhood, where the locals put on a welcome. From there the big climb takes you to the high ground of the Serra do Mar, then across rolling hills to the summit of Pedra da Macela. The descent passes Janela do Mar, a 2 km single track with views over Angra Bay, and finishes on the Gold Trail into the historic centre.

The longest gap is the 18 km from Taquari up to Serraria, where you climb from near sea level to about 1,250 m. Taquari and Trutario Rio Manso are the only places your crew can help you, and they hold your two drop bags. Finishing under 26 hours lets you enter the Western States lottery, the organizer says.

The organizer lists the PTR 58 as 53 km with about 3,200 m of climbing (the race page's profile of the 2026 course measures 54 km). After the streets of town, the first hard climb goes through the Atlantic Forest of the Serra da Bocaina National Park. You drop back to sea level, then climb again to Pedra da Macela, with views over Paraty Bay. The way home is the technical Gold Trail, on paving that's more than 200 years old.

From Rio Pequeno to Macela is close to 16 km, over the top of Pedra da Macela. There's no outside help on this course, so carry what you need between stations.

The PTR 34 climbs from town into the foothills of the Serra da Bocaina on dirt roads and trails, with views of the sea. Expect river crossings and dense forest. The organizer rates it as moderately technical, with about 1,100 m of climbing. On the 2026 course the one cutoff before the finish is Mato Dentro, at 12:30 PM, and you have 9 hours to finish.

The PTR 25 leaves the historic centre on a stretch of road, then heads out through rural country at the base of the Serra da Bocaina. It mixes roads, trails and a river crossing, with about 750 m of climbing. The organizer pitches it as a fast course with low technical demands, a good first mountain race. The time limit is 6 hours.

It's the only race that doesn't start in town: you begin at 2 PM at Fazenda Bananal, a 17th-century farm a few minutes outside Paraty, and run back through farmland and forest on roads and trails, with river crossings. It has about 550 m of climbing and low technical demands, so it suits a first trail race.

Paraty RUN 7

The RUN 7 starts at 7 AM on Sunday and loops through the historic centre and the sights around it, with about 50 m of climbing and a 2 hour limit. It gives no Running Stones and needs no UTMB Index.

Registration

You register for 2027 through UTMB, with one link for Brazilians paying in reais and one for international runners paying in US dollars. It closes on August 10, 2027, or sooner if a race sells out. You need a valid UTMB Index in the 50K category for the PTR 108 and in the 20K category for the PTR 58; the shorter races need none.

The final prices run from R$1,600 (US$338) for the PTR 108 down to R$300 (US$63) for the RUN 7, with a 10% discount for a limited time. Runners 60 and over get 50% off by emailing the organizer. You can transfer your bib or change distance until August 10 (a transfer costs R$100), and without the cancellation insurance there's no refund.

Every runner needs a medical certificate signed by a doctor in the 12 months before the race, uploaded to your UTMB account by August 31, 2027.

Getting to Paraty

Paraty is about 4 hours by car from both big airports. São Paulo (GRU) is 269 km away and Rio de Janeiro (GIG) 263 km, and the organizer suggests bus, rental car or a private transfer. The start, finish and expo are all in the historic centre. For a place to stay, the organizer points you to the historic centre and the Jabaquara neighbourhood.

Crews and spectators

Only PTR 108 runners can have a crew, and only at Taquari and Trutario Rio Manso, where the drop bags are. One person can help you, in the area set aside for it. On the other five races no outside help is allowed anywhere.

There are no pacers. Running with anyone who isn't registered is penalised, except in the marked spectator areas near aid stations. The athlete's guide lists where friends can watch. The organizer's highlights page names Fazenda Bananal, the 7 Quedas waterfall and the Rio Manso restaurant as good places to see runners.

Weather and what to carry

Paraty has a tropical monsoon climate. INMET's 1981 to 2010 normals for Angra dos Reis, up the coast, give a September average high of 24.5°C, a low of 18.3°C and 121 mm of rain over 12 days. The PTR 108 and PTR 58 climb to about 1,800 m, though, and the regulation tells you to be ready for night, wind, cold, fog or rain.

For the PTR 108, missing water (at least 1 liter), a waterproof hooded jacket, a headlamp, a survival blanket or a phone gets you disqualified. The full list also takes a second headlamp, a cap or bandana, a beanie, a base layer, a whistle, an elastic bandage, a food reserve and a collapsible cup. The organizer may also make its cold or heat kit mandatory in race week, so bring both. Aid stations hand out no cups or cutlery, so carry your own.

Paraty FAQ

When is Paraty Brazil by UTMB 2027?

September 23 to 26, 2027. The PTR 108 starts on Friday the 24th at 7 PM, the PTR 58, 34, 25 and 17 run on Saturday the 25th, and the RUN 7 is on Sunday the 26th.

How long is the PTR 108?

The organizer gives it as 101 km with about 4,850 m of climbing for 2027, despite the name. The race page's profile of the 2026 course measures 102.2 km. The time limit is 30 hours.

Do you need a UTMB Index to run Paraty?

Only for the two long races: a valid index in the 50K category for the PTR 108 and in the 20K category for the PTR 58, valid when you register. The PTR 34, 25, 17 and RUN 7 need none.

Is Paraty a Western States qualifier?

Yes, the PTR 108. Western States lists the September 2027 race as a qualifier, and you need to finish in under 26 hours to enter its lottery.

Can you have a crew or a pacer at Paraty?

A crew of one, on the PTR 108 only, at Taquari and Trutario Rio Manso. No pacers on any race, and no outside help on the other five.

Is there cell service on the Paraty course?

Not everywhere. The regulation mentions areas where only emergency calls are possible, and gives 193 as the number to call in an absolute emergency. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.
