Leadville Trail 100 Run course map and aid stations

A hundred miles out of Leadville and back, over Hope Pass twice, with 30 hours to do it.

August 21 to 22, 2027 Leadville, Colorado

The Leadville Trail 100 Run was first run in 1983, when 45 runners lined up for it. Ken Chlouber, a local miner, started it with Merilee Maupin to bring people to town after the Climax Mine closed. It's now run by Life Time as part of the Leadville Race Series.

The course is an out-and-back. It starts at 10,200 feet, runs south past Twin Lakes and crosses Hope Pass at 12,500 feet to turn around at Winfield, then comes back over the pass to town. You have 30 hours, and you get a big belt buckle for breaking 25.

The map shows the 2026 course, rerouted around the Willow Fire. The 2027 course hasn't been published yet. Runners pulled at Winfield won't have cell service to reach their crew until the shuttle gets to Granite, so download the map before you go. Your phone's GPS works with no signal, and the map will still show where you are.

This is the 2026 course: 99.7 miles with 13,357 feet of climbing. The Willow Fire hit Hagerman Pass Road, Sugarloaf Mountain and the Powerline climb, so the 2026 route left them out. Instead you head west from Harrison Avenue around Turquoise Lake, past a small aid station at Carter Summit with limited food and drink, then turn back east around the lake to the dam. The usual course picks up again on the way into Outward Bound.

From there it's the traditional route south to Half Pipe and Twin Lakes. The hard part is the 11.9 miles from Twin Lakes to Winfield, over Hope Pass, with the Hope Pass aid station on the climb. You cross the pass again on the way back. Twin Lakes inbound, at mile 64, is where pacers can join. Each aid station except Carter Summit and Winfield sees you twice.

Getting an entry

The lottery for 2027 is open December 1 to 15, 2026, and results come out in early January. Entering is free: you give a card, and it's only charged if you're picked. Team entries were dropped in 2025, so everyone enters alone. You have to be 18 by race day.

Outside the lottery, the Leadville Trail Marathon, the Silver Rush 50 Run and the Austin Rattler Run each give out at least 35 entry coins, and you have to be at the awards ceremony to claim one. The Run Camp + Entry package goes on sale December 1, 2026, and there are charity entries, a coaching package with entry, and early spots for some Life Time members.

Entry was $495 in 2026, and the 2027 price isn't out. Fees aren't refundable or transferable.

Getting to Leadville

Leadville is about 100 miles from Denver and 128 from Colorado Springs. From Denver you take I-70 west, then Highway 91 south from Copper Mountain over Fremont Pass. It's the highest incorporated city in the US, so come early if you can and get used to the altitude.

In 2026 you picked up your packet in person with a photo ID on Friday, the day of the mandatory athlete meeting. On race morning you park at the Rodeo Grounds and Community Fields, Lake County Intermediate School or Lake County High School and walk or take the shuttle to the start at 6th and Harrison. The shuttles ran from 3:00 to 4:30 AM.

Crews, pacers and drop bags

Crews can meet you in three places, twice each: Outward Bound, Pipeline and Twin Lakes Village. Crewing anywhere else gets your runner disqualified. Pipeline is a crew point with no aid. The nearest aid station is Half Pipe, about 2 miles past it on the way out and 2 miles before it on the way back. You can't drive to Twin Lakes: crews ride a shuttle from Outward Bound, which ran from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM in 2026, and wear a wristband. Some crews get a reserved 10 by 10 foot space there. Everyone else uses the open crewing area, where tents, chairs and coolers aren't allowed.

Pacers can join from Twin Lakes inbound, at mile 64. You can swap pacers as often as you like, but only one can run with you at a time until mile 99. A pacer can carry your food and gear but can't push, pull, carry or tow you. Each runner gets two pacer bibs, and each pacer signs a waiver. Half Pipe has no parking, so pacers walk in, and Turquoise Lake Dam is reached by shuttle from Outward Bound.

Drop bags go to Turquoise Lake Dam, Outward Bound, Half Pipe, Twin Lakes and Winfield, in clear plastic bags. You pass all of them but Winfield twice, so the organizer suggests packing two bags for each of those stations.

Weather on Hope Pass

August in Leadville averages a high of 68°F and a low of 38°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The organizer gives a wider range, from the upper 70s by day to the upper 20s at night. Mornings tend to be sunny and afternoons bring showers. During the race it can rain, hail or even snow.

Lightning is a hazard, especially above treeline, and cold, wind and rain together can bring on hypothermia. The organizer's advice is not to try the round trip over Hope Pass without warm, protective clothing, whatever the forecast.

Leadville 100 FAQ

When is the Leadville 100 in 2027?

Saturday, August 21, 2027. The 2027 schedule isn't out yet. In 2026 the race started at 4:00 AM on Saturday at 6th and Harrison, and the course closed 30 hours later.

How do you get into the Leadville 100?

Through the lottery, open December 1 to 15, 2026 for the 2027 race. You can also earn a coin at a Leadville Race Series qualifier, or buy a Run Camp + Entry package, a charity entry or a coaching package with entry.

Is the Leadville 100 a Western States qualifier?

Yes. A finish in under 30 hours at the 2027 race counts toward the 2028 Western States lottery, by Western States' list of qualifying races.

Can you have a pacer at the Leadville 100?

Yes, from Twin Lakes inbound, at mile 64, to the finish. Only one pacer can be with you at a time until mile 99, and they can carry your food and gear.

What are the Leadville 100 buckle times?

Under 25 hours for the big buckle and under 30 hours for the small one, which is also the official cutoff. Buckles go by chip time, from when you cross the start line. Cutoffs go by gun time, from the 4:00 AM start in 2026.

Is the 2027 Leadville 100 course the same as 2026?

It isn't published yet. The 2026 course was rerouted around Turquoise Lake to avoid areas affected by the Willow Fire, and it left out Hagerman Pass Road, Sugarloaf Mountain and Powerline. The map on this page shows that 2026 course.
