Kodiak Ultra Marathons course maps and aid stations

Five races in the mountains around Big Bear Lake, from a 5.9 mile 10K to a 100 miler that loops the whole valley.

2027 dates not announced yet, usually in October Big Bear Lake, California

Kodiak is a UTMB World Series race in Big Bear Lake, high in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. In 2026 it was the series' Americas Major for the second year running, with double Running Stones and spots in the World Series Finals for its top finishers.

The 100 mile starts on Friday afternoon at Rim Nordic, outside Running Springs, and finishes in the Village of Big Bear Lake. The 100K, 50K, 21K and 10K all start and finish in the Village on Saturday. The courses run on dirt roads and trails in the San Bernardino National Forest.

The race guide warns that cell and satellite coverage is limited, enough to delay runner tracking by up to two hours. Download the course map before you go, whether you're racing or crewing. GPS shows where you are without a signal.

The organizer calls it "a true mountain 100 miler with a lot of running above 7,000 feet". The course circles the Big Bear Valley, with miles on the Pacific Crest Trail in Holcomb Valley and a climb to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, about 9,950 feet. It passes from pine forest to high desert with Joshua trees.

Around miles 72 to 76 the last stretch to the Sugarloaf summit is two-way, so expect runners coming down as you go up. For 2026 the final descent came off Snow Summit on the Going Green trail. Crab Flats to Camp Whittle is 11 miles, and the race director asks you to leave Crab Flats with at least 1.5 liters of water.

Pacers can join at Doble Camp 2, either Sugarloaf visit, or Bear Mountain. Crews reach Doble Camp and Sugarloaf only on the race's shuttles.

The 100K takes in Sugarloaf Mountain, the high point at about 9,950 feet, and the Skyline Trail. The climb to the Sugarloaf summit, around miles 14 to 18, is two-way.

Grandview, a self-serve hydration station between Snow Summit and Bluff Lake, was new in 2026. The Sugarloaf aid station also moved half a mile to protect a sensitive species. The course grew by about a mile, and the finish cutoff moved to 2:15 AM Sunday to match.

The 50K climbs the face of Snow Summit early, then follows the Skyline Trail through granite boulders, on a ridge with views over the mountains and Big Bear Lake. Between Snow Summit and Bluff Lake, about miles 6.5 to 14, the race director describes a forest road that's "fast, runnable, and very scenic".

The course file also marks Camp Gilboa as a stand-in for the Bluff Lake aid station, if it has to move.

The 21K goes straight up the Snow Summit ski area. From the top you look out over Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains, and the organizer says that on a very clear day you can see the ocean. From there the course passes the Grandview hydration station on its way back to the Village.

The 10K runs Big Bear's South Shore trails and the Snow Summit ski area, with a climb to the Going Green aid station before you head back down. That station is mid-mountain and crews can't reach it: they can see you at the base of Snow Summit.

Registration

Entry is online through UTMB and stays open until each race sells out. In 2026 every distance but the 10K sold out, and the organizer keeps no waitlist. Online registration closed the Sunday before the race, and there's no race day registration.

Entries can't be refunded or transferred. You can defer once to the next year if you ask by early September.

The 2027 dates weren't announced when this page was checked.

Getting to Big Bear Lake

A forested peak in evening light above lakeshore cabins and pines at Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is about 100 miles from Los Angeles, two to three hours by car. Highway 330 to Highway 18, through Running Springs, is usually the fastest way up. Highway 38 from Redlands is longer and more gradual, and Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley is the way in from the high desert. Check Caltrans for closures before you drive.

There's no runner parking at the starts. In 2026 the 100M runners parked at the Fox Farm lot and took a shuttle to Rim Nordic, and everyone else parked at the Sandalwood lot and rode a shuttle to the Village. Visit Big Bear is the race's lodging partner.

Crewing and pacing

Crews can't drive to most aid stations. Doble Camp is reached only by the race's shuttle from the Snow Summit lot, and Sugarloaf by the shuttle from Bear Mountain, then a walk of about half a mile. Bear Mountain has crew parking. At Snow Summit, crews meet runners at the base, or ride the paid chairlift to the summit station.

Only the 100M allows pacers, and they carry the same mandatory kit as the runner. Some forest parking needs a California Adventure Pass, $5 a day.

Weather and what to carry

October in Big Bear Lake averages highs around 63°F and lows around 35°F, by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. The race guide warns that the temperature can fall as much as 35°F quickly after sunset. Most of the course is higher and colder than town.

For the 100M the mandatory kit includes two working headlamps with spare power, 1.5 liters of water, a hooded jacket, a safety blanket and a phone. The organizer can also make a cold weather kit mandatory: protective eyewear, a second warm layer, a warm hat, warm waterproof gloves and waterproof pants.

Kodiak FAQ

When is Kodiak 2027?

The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when this page was checked. The 2026 edition ran October 8 to 11, with the 100M on Friday the 9th and the other races on Saturday the 10th.

Is Kodiak a Western States qualifier?

Yes. Finishing the 2026 100M in under 36 hours or the 100K in under 18 hours counted as a qualifier for the 2027 Western States Endurance Run.

How many Running Stones do you get at Kodiak?

8 for the 100M, 6 for the 100K, 4 for the 50K and 2 for the 21K. As the Americas Major in 2026, Kodiak gave double stones. The 10K gives none.

Can you have a pacer at Kodiak?

Only in the 100M. Pacers can join at Doble Camp 2, Sugarloaf 1, Sugarloaf 2 or Bear Mountain, and not at Doble Camp 1 or the base of Snow Summit.

Is there cell service on the Kodiak course?

Not much. The race guide warns of limited cell and satellite coverage and says cell service may be limited at aid stations. Download the course map in Goat Maps before you go: your phone's GPS still shows where you are without a signal.

How much climbing is the Kodiak 100?

The 2026 aid station chart gives 15,735 feet of climbing over 100.1 miles, with a 36 hour limit. The high point is the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, about 9,950 feet.
