Dragon's Back Race stage maps and cutoffs

Six days down the mountain spine of Wales, from Conwy Castle on the north coast to Cardiff Castle in the capital.

September 6 to 11, 2027 Conwy to Cardiff, Wales

The Dragon's Back Race runs the length of Wales in six stages, starting inside Conwy Castle and finishing in Bute Park beside Cardiff Castle. The line was inspired by the first race in 1992. It goes over the Carneddau, the Glyderau and the Snowdon horseshoe on day one, then the Rhinogydd, Cadair Idris, the Cambrian Mountains, the Elan Valley and the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) before the South Wales Valleys lead you into Cardiff. Ultra X runs it now, having bought it out of administration in April 2026 after Ourea Events stopped trading.

You follow one mandatory route and visit its checkpoints, some of them on summits. The organizer stresses that this is not a trail race and says it's meant for runners with solid navigation and hill skills. It also tells families following along that the route is remote and runners should not expect regular phone service. Put each day's line on your phone before you leave camp: GPS shows where you are without a signal.

Everyone starts together at 06:00 inside Conwy Castle, Dragon's Fire runners included, and your time starts when you leave through the gift shop. The first climb out of Conwy is gentle. After the aid station in the Ogwen Valley the scrambling begins: Tryfan, then Crib Goch and the whole Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) horseshoe. Both are UK Grade 1 scrambles, and poles must be stowed on them.

Besides Ogwen at 14:00 and Pen-y-Pass at 16:40, there's a third cutoff at 18:30, at the Pyg Track junction before Yr Wyddfa. The Hatchling's shortest option ends at Ogwen, before the scrambling. For 2026 the descent to Pen-y-Pass changed slightly.

The line heads straight south over the Moelwynion, drops to the water point at Maentwrog and then crosses the Rhinogydd. These hills are low but broken and rough, and the organizer warns that you'll see almost nobody all day. Most finishers rate days one and two the hardest of the race.

There's a cutoff at 12:20 at a path and road junction (checkpoint 4), and another at Cwm Bychan. Dragon's Fire finishes here: a bus takes Fire runners back to Conwy on the morning of day three.

Cadair Idris comes early. Later you climb Pumlumon Fawr, the highest point of the Cambrian Mountains. You also run through the middle of two towns, and the café at Abergynolwyn has a cutoff of 12:45 before the aid station at Machynlleth. The organizer says that if you finish day three, the statistics are on your side for finishing the race.

Day four is the quiet one, through little-visited hills and forests and the Elan Valley's grass tussocks to Drygarn Fawr on the moorland plateau. Stay with other runners if you can, because you probably won't meet anyone else. After the aid station at Elan Village, a water point later in the day has a cutoff of 19:00.

For 2026 the camp moved 3 km up the road to Ystradffin Farm.

At 75 km this is the longest day, and the organizer expects it to be the crux of the race for many runners. The 2026 camp move added 3 km at the start, on road and mostly downhill, with the same cutoffs. The line passes Llandovery, where Dragon's Tail starts at 07:30, then crosses the Black Mountain to the aid station near Cray Reservoir before the long traverse of the Beacons, including Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales. A water point later on has a cutoff of 18:00. Camp is just short of Talybont Reservoir.

The last day is fast: trails, tracks and stretches of tarmac through the old steel, iron and coal country of the South Wales Valleys. After the aid station at Trelewis, a water point has a cutoff of 18:00. You finish in Bute Park beside Cardiff Castle, where friends and family can watch from noon. The first finishers are expected around 13:00, and the prizegiving is at 19:30.

Entry and formats

Entries for 2027 are open. The full race costs £2,095, with a £400 deposit and then monthly payments. If you raise at least £3,000 for Parkinson's UK or CALM, the entry is half price. There's no qualifying race: you accept a participant declaration, and you must be over 20.

Besides the full race there are three ways in. The Hatchling costs the same as the full race. You run the first or second half of each day, in any mix you like, and you can switch to it at any point, including after missing a cutoff. Dragon's Fire (6 and 7 September, £599) is days one and two. Dragon's Tail (10 and 11 September, £399) is days five and six from Llandovery.

Getting to Conwy and home from Cardiff

Registration is on Sunday 5 September, 13:00 to 17:00, at Ysgol Porth Y Felin in Conwy, with a compulsory briefing at 17:30. If you miss the briefing, you can't start. Conwy has a station on the North Wales Coast Line and is about an hour and a half by car from Manchester and Liverpool airports. You can leave a car for the week at Morfa Bach car park, which may charge.

A coach leaves Cardiff for Conwy at 10:00 on registration day, and another leaves Cardiff at 09:00 the morning after the finish, reaching Conwy around 13:30. Both are paid extras, booked ahead, and so is a transfer bag sent from Conwy to Cardiff. Book your own beds in Conwy before the start and in Cardiff after the finish.

Camps, bags and supporters

You sleep in eight-person tents each night, in camps the organizer calls very basic (think a farmer's field), with portable toilets and no showers. Bring your own sleeping bag and mat. Everything for the week goes in one Ortlieb 59 L dry bag (the limit is 15 kg), which the team moves to each camp. A 10 L resupply bag of up to 2.5 kg waits at each day's aid station.

There is no crewing. Supporters can't run with you, carry anything or hand you food, and they can't enter the camps, aid stations or water points. They can see you off at Conwy Castle and meet you at the finish in Cardiff. During the race they can follow the live GPS tracking and send Dragon Mail, which you pick up at camp in the evening. You can buy food at shops and cafés on the route, as long as anyone else could buy the same thing.

Weather and kit

Expect mild, wet weather. Capel Curig in Snowdonia averages a September high of 16.0°C and a low of 9.4°C, with 206 mm of rain over about 16 days. The organizer warns that if it rains several days running, everything in camp gets damp, so a spare set of waterproofs for the evenings is worth the weight.

The kit you carry every day includes waterproof jacket and trousers, a survival bag, a synthetic warm layer of at least 300 g, a baseplate compass, a headtorch, a red rear light, bottles or a bladder that hold 1.5 L, and a phone. The race gives you a GPS tracker and a map. In very cold or wet weather it can add a second hooded warm layer, waterproof gloves, a warm hat and full-length tights; in hot weather, a sun hat and another litre of water capacity. It tells you at registration or in camp.

Dragon's Back FAQ

When is the Dragon's Back Race 2027?

6 to 11 September 2027, with registration in Conwy on Sunday 5 September. Dragon's Fire runs 6 and 7 September and Dragon's Tail 10 and 11 September.

How much does the Dragon's Back Race cost?

The full race and the Hatchling are £2,095, starting with a £400 deposit. Dragon's Fire is £599 and Dragon's Tail £399 at the standard price. The entry covers five nights in tents, meals, moving your bags, transport if you drop out or switch to the Hatchling, and medical and mountain rescue cover. Coaches between Cardiff and Conwy cost extra.

What are the Dragon's Back Race cutoffs?

Each day's course closes at 22:00, sixteen hours after the 06:00 start. On top of that, each day has two or three cutoffs along the way, given in the stages above. Miss one and you aren't out of the event: you carry on as a Hatchling.

Do you need experience to enter the Dragon's Back Race?

There's no qualifying race. You accept a participant declaration when you enter, and you must be over 20. Under-21s should expect the organizer to check their experience. It describes a typical finisher as a reasonably experienced mid-pack runner with a consistent block of training behind them.

Can you use trekking poles on the Dragon's Back Race?

Yes, except on the day one scrambles on Tryfan and Crib Goch, where the organizer strictly enforces a rule that poles stay stowed.

Is there phone signal on the Dragon's Back Race?

Not reliably. The organizer says the route through the mountains is remote and runners shouldn't expect regular phone service. You still have to carry a phone, and the race gives you a GPS tracker. Download the day's line before you leave camp so you can follow it offline.
